One way to ensure your webpage ranks well is to build links – as many quality links as you can. A backlink is an inbound html code that points to your website. You are probably wondering why you would want a backlink. I will explain it this way - If you have many websites with one-way links to your website, the search engines interpret this in your favor. You want to make sure that your website is at the “hub of the wheel” so to speak — all the spokes, or links, are pointing to your website.

Your goal should be that the search engines view your site as an “authority site”. If a website provides excellent, interesting articles and other content, and has many readers, that website could be called an “authority site”. Websites mention and point to, or refer to, articles and videos on the authority site.

Let’s step back a bit and explain links in an example:

If Sally’s site links to you, then you have one inbound link. However, if your website links back to Sally’s site, the links balance each other out and nobody wins — that is called a reciprocal link. Don’t look for reciprocal links. You should look for links back to your website from other websites where you don’t have to link to them.

Now who is going to do that? Any website marketer who has been around for some time does not want reciprocal links. That website owner wants inbound links to his site.

Sources of inbound, one-way links:

Links from directories – Directories aren’t as popular as they once were now that people use search engines to find what they want, but directories still offer free inbound links. All you have to do is apply for them. There are several companies that offer free software. Just search for a directory submitter. There are several to choose from. You will find one that is easy to use and makes submitting to directories a snap.

Links from articles you write – There is probably no better way to get people to visit your blog than to write good articles. When you write a good article, you need to send that article to a large number of article directories.

They will post your article at no charge to you and most of them will allow you to put a couple of self-serving links in the “resource box”. The resource box is where you can advertise your website, tell them what they will find, and perhaps send them to your subscription optin page.

As you might guess, sending your articles out to thirty or forty sites can be a daunting task. I would suggest that you do a search for article submitter software.

You may find an article submitter that works very well and saves you hours of valuable time. You type the information into the article submitter once and it will automatically fill it in to the article site. It even keeps track of your username and password for those sites where you have to register.

You should spend the time to find a company that will do this for you. It costs me money every month to submit eight articles to many, many article directories. I think it is worth the money, but if you are just starting out, perhaps the free way is better.

Comment on “dofollow” blogs

Some WordPress blog owners have installed a plugin called “dofollow”. This overrides the default of “nofollow” that the blog comes setup as. If the blog has this plugin installed and activated, you will get a backlink to your website when you make a comment on that site. (Most blog owners aren’t aware that this may be a reason they don’t get as many comments on their articles as they could.)

There is software that I use that finds blogs that have the “dofollow” plugin installed. I look for them and I am more inclined to comment on those blogs because it gets me a backlink.

Search for a blog submitter. It is the software that you use to help find those blogs. Most blog submitters are free too. All you do is type in keywords that refer to your website and it will find blogs that have similar keywords.

Free directories you *must* know about:

Most blog owners and internet marketers have forgotten this one. It is right under their noses, but they haven’t listed their sites in local directories. Here is a short list of local directories that you must do tonight.

* Google Local

* www.yellowpages.com

* Yahoo Local

* Yahoo Yellow Pages

* www.superpages.com

* www.yellowbook.com

* www.atlantaataglance.com

* www.your nearest big city.com

* www.big city chamber.org

Even if you don’t have a physical address where you accept the public, you can still put your website on these various directories. You don’t have to show your physical address, if you don’t want it to show.

To summarize:

Every website marketer needs backlinks. The website marketer’s goal should be to grow their site in size to become an authority site in his area of specialty.

It is not difficult to get backlinks, but it is time consuming and laborious. I would suggest that you use software to help you speed up these repetitive tasks. Get free software called directory submitter. Obtain an article submitter product. Use a blog finder to help you comment on blogs that give you a backlink.

Lastly, don’t forget the obvious. Use the list above to get listed in the local directories.

You only have a finite number of hours, so spend your time effectively.
I’m a list freak. Every time I come across a good one I’ll print it out and check it off until I’ve completed every single item on the list – no matter how long it takes. I found this awesome list today while I was browsing online. Not only do they have great advice for link-building but you can also download a free e-book with some easy to follow, sure to work information. If you’re new, or stuck in a rut it would be in your best interest to visit this site and take advantage of all they have to offer. Visit Courts Internet Marketing School

From Courts Internet Marketing School – 102 Ways To Make Your Site A Back-Link Superstar:

1. Provide more value than other blogs and sites. This is by far the most neglected area by all of us! We want to market our sites like crazy, but conveniently forget that we need to offer more to our readers. We want to have 300,000 hits a day but we only want to write five 300 word articles per month. Steve Pavlina said that it should be easy to make a million dollars if only he could figure out how to provide a million dollars worth of value. Sites that have that kind of value don’t have any problem getting the link love.
2. Add a blog to your site. Blogs are capable of getting a lot more back-link love than regular websites. There are several reasons for this:
* Blogs are tracked in real-time. Blog search engines publish the most recent blog entries they can find. This means your new entries get linked to instantly.
* Blogs are much easier to update than regular websites. You can create a lot more content in the same amount of time. There is no need to design a new page for a new article. You simply write a new article and publish. Your increase in content will increase your visibility and ability to get links.
* Blogs get links from other blogs. If you run a regular website that isn’t a blog, you will have a harder time getting links from bloggers. Bloggers mostly read and follow blogs!

If your site is or has a blog, well done. If you have no idea how to setup a blog you should visit the following entry of this site, “5263 Words On Starting A Profitable Blog.“
3. Post relentlessly. The more you are able to post, the more you will appear in blog search engines like Technorati, Google Blog Search, and Blog Search Engine. Note: People aren’t going to link to posts that are garbage so don’t sacrifice quality for quantity. If your site isn’t a blog, update often and then go back to #2 and add a blog.
4. Make sure that your blog is set to ping. If you’re using a WordPress blog you will find this in your admin section: Go to Options and then Writing. Make sure that you have some blog search engines in the Update Services box at the bottom. The ones I’m using are:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

http://pingoat.com/goat/RPC2/

http://pingqueue.com/rpc/

http://ping.feedburner.com

http://www.bloglines.com/ping

http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2

5. Use Technorati tags (follow the link to the left for a lesson on what they are and how to implement them. Opens in a new window.). Getting into more categories in Technorati and other blog search engines will get you more links from them, exposing you to other bloggers and webmasters that can link to you. To easily create Technorati tags, use this simple tool: Tag Generator. All you have to do is type in the keyword, and the tool will make the code for the tag.
6. Create authority posts. An authority post by my definition takes at least 10 hours to write. These are posts that people are likely to be linked to. My post, “5263 Words On Starting A Profitable Blog” has already been linked to quite a bit. Authority posts are more thorough than most other posts. They’re usually longer than other posts. Authority posts must be easy to find (follow this link for a lesson on where you should put your authority posts) on your site, getting them more exposure than other posts.
7. Have your friends tag your best work in Digg. (Digg is a site that allows people to vote whether they like and article or not.) Your friends can get the article moving in the right direction. There are also other social bookmarking sites that are very popular. Here are a few of the biggies: Reddit, Netscape, Del.Icio.Us, and StumbleUpon. This won’t do a whole lot of good if your article isn’t good, but if it is it can bring you thousands of visitors per day, which will link to a good amount of links.
8. Encourage readers to Digg authority articles. If they like the article or post, they will vote for it for you. It only takes a few seconds.
9. Make your articles easy to Digg. If you look at the end of this article, you will find a button for Digg, Reddit, and some other imporant social bookmarking sites. These can make a huge difference and can add to a lot more exposure and links. To install those buttons I used the Sociable plugin for WordPress.
10. Creating list-posts. Examples: “Top 10 Ways To Stop Being A Lazy Pig”, “Top 5 Internet Marketing Gurus”, “Top 25 Reasons Why 99% Of Bloggers Don’t Make It”, “99 Ways To Make Your Blog Or Site A Backlink Super Power”. People love linking to that stuff. Place your list-post in a prominent location on your site (follow this link for a lesson on where you should put your authority posts) or people will never find it.
11. Recognize your field’s gurus. Link to them often. They are going to watch closely the source of their traffic and will definitely see if you’re sending some their way. If you send them traffic, they may start reading your site. If they find something they like, they might link to it. One link from a guru in your field could mean more than 100 weaker links. Gurus are usually pretty generous in spreading the link love. That’s a hint, hint to Darren Rowse, Shoemoney (Jeremy Schoemaker), John Chow, and Steve Pavlina, all of which I read daily.
12. Publish an RSS feed. An RSS feed is a news feed that people can subscribe to. They can see if you have written new entries on your site without having to go there. Many webmasters stay up to date by reading RSS feeds from the sites in their industry. If you don’t have a feed, these webmasters will never see your updates. If you have a WordPress blog, it creates an RSS feed for you. Other sites will naturally syndicate the feed. (They will post it in their site) Some of them will link to you as the source.
13. Setup your feed on feedburner. This makes your feed subscriptions easy to track and allows you to encourage users to subscribe. After you have quite a few subscribers, it makes getting additional subscriptions easy.
14. Comment on other blogs. Always fill in the URL box so that the owner can find your site. Good comments will spark more interest than dull ones. Answering other people’s questions in comments gets them excited – one of the most effective ways to spark an online rambling about you and your site.
15. Respond to comments left on your blog. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to get full write ups about this site just because I responded to people’s questions and comments. When people’s questions are answered, you become the authority. People can’t help but link to the authority.
16. Respond to your email. Be kind to people. Be cool to people. Help them with their questions. If it’s a hard question to answer, post the answer on your site so that you get the content. Email the person that asked and give them the URL to their answer. Being helpful to others will earn you respect and link love.
17. Link out to other blogs like crazy. If you link to interesting articles on other blogs, they will link back to interesting articles that you have. Bloggers usually check their site stats every 30 seconds, they’ll see that you have linked to them. (It’s an addiction!) Many people don’t want to link out because it spreads their pagerank thin. Would you rather have pagerank or money? I, personally would rather have money. Pagerank will come. It won’t do you any good to have high pagerank if you don’t have any traffic, and most people don’t realize that the two aren’t as tied together as it seems.
18. Offer to be a guest blogger. If you can write for someone’s site, you will certainly be able to link to related resources on your site. If you’re going to do this one, write a killer article and submit it to an A-lister (leading blogger in your field) who has a high-traffic site.
19. Timestamp your posts. (Timestamping is adjusting your post entry so that it is posted on a certain day, at a certain time. You can finish an article on Saturday and set it to post on Monday.) There are more visitors at Technorati, Google Blog Search, and Digg on weekdays. Never publish an really good article on a weekend, you’ll be off the front page of Technorati before all the visitors are there. If you’re using a WordPress blog, there is a Timestamp option on your “Write Post” page. You can set the date and time you want the article to publish, and then click publish. It won’t show up on your site until that date and time.
20. Show related posts in your blog entries. A blogger might find your site via one article but find a different one that they’re really interested in. Showing your related posts can help them to be found more easily. Interest+Visibility=Links. If you’re using WordPress, you can find out why and how to use the related posts plugin here.
21. Use deep-linking. Deep-linking is when you link to older posts or pages in new posts or pages. This article links to quite a few of my older articles that I think are good resources for the people reading this one. This can help your readers and expose your good work to them.
22. Use meme trackers to find hot topics. Meme trackers are sites that track information published on blogs and news sites, and provide information about which topics are the hottest. The big meme trackers are Memeorandum and Techmeme.com. Technorati also has a type of meme tracker. They show you the hottest tags in real time. When you find hot discussions, contribute to them. Your opinions can bring valuable visitors to your site, and will get linked to from other opinions on the topic. If you’re posts are tagged properly, people will be able to find them easily, so make sure you use tags on your articles, as you learned earlier.
23. Do blog reviews. (Follow the link to the left to find a list of blogs that do review exchanges.) Tons of webmasters will link to you in exchange for reviewing their site.
24. Do link exchanges. You never know if a sitewik or blog will exchange links with you, unless you ask. Since most bloggers won’t have traditional link pages (thank goodness), you should probably find one of their posts that is interesting, and link to it in one of your articles. Ask them to do the same.
25. Add a page that invites people to link to you. Offer to link back. Ask them to link to an interesting article on your site and tell them that you’ll link to an interesting article on their site. Create a contact form so that they can let you know quickly and easily that they have taken you up on your offer. You have to be willing to help others or this method will never work.
26. Trade blogroll links. Some bloggers will trade sitewide (this means on every page) or blogroll links. I would only do it if I felt that the site truly had something special to offer to my readers.
27. Ask me to do a link exchange. Better yet, link to me first and then ask me to linkback. I will! Even better, link to me everyday and don’t ask for me to link back.
28. Get a MyBlogLog account. MyBlogLog.com is like MySpace for bloggers. It it a place where bloggers go to meet each other and find new blogging friends. You can link to your blog(s) from your profile page, and other bloggers will have a chance to check out your work, which could lead to additional links.
29. Start a MyBlogLog.com Community. You can create your own community that members can join. Be extra social and invite members to join your community. This exposes a lot more bloggers to your site.
30. Do article exchanges with webmasters on your field.
31. Do a scheduled, recurring guest blog exchange with someone from your field. Writing for each other can give you both exposure to a new group of individuals that are interested in your field. You can link to resources on your own site each time.
32. Read your posts before publishing. Edit, edit, and edit again. Make sure they’re right before you show them to the world. Make sure your writing is easy to read and grammatically correct.
33. Run spell check. This probably sounds stupid but I’ve been called out in my comments a few times and I doubt that I’ll get any links from the people that noticed my spelling errors.
34. Learn more about your field. If you’re site doesn’t have any good material, you probably won’t have much luck getting links from other bloggers.
35. Create walk-throughs. I created a walk-through for one of my cell phone sites that teaches people how to connect their Motorola Krzr cell phone to their computer. People love me for it, and I got links from Cnet, Mobiledia, and HowardForums because of it. These are 3 of the biggest cell phone sites! You can walk people through installing ads, writing a good post, starting a blog, baking banana bread, riding a bike, or anything related to your field.
36. Use giveaways. Hold a raffle where you give away something cool. The participants have to link to you in order to get in their name into the raffle. If you gave away an Xbox 360 you would probably get a lot more links than you would if you gave away a snickers bar. (This method is only down this far because it costs money, otherwise it would be very near the top because it works like crazy)
37. Write articles tailored to beginners. Most people in your field are beginners! Most bloggers in general are beginners. You can’t connect with them by writing about PHP scripting and dynamic server protocols. You have to assume that your readers know nothing about the topic without talking down to them. They will show you their appreciation.
38. Submit articles to article sites like: Article Dashboard, GoArticles, and Article City. They will also allow you to place a link to your site at the bottom of the article. You can write an article about anything in your field. Most article sites like the articles to be about 500 words.
39. Submit stories to news sites. Even huge sites like ESPN.com accept stories from free lancers.
40. Review products on your site. Most brands are trying desperately to get more exposure. If you provide a thorough, fair review of a company’s product, it might get linked to. For best results review products from new, up-and-coming companies.
41. Review products on other sites like ePinions. You can quickly establish yourself as an expert by writing thorough reviews of products in your field. Some of the traffic that hits your review will follow the trail back to your site, leading to links.
42. Write testimonials for sites whose services have helped you. The testimonials themselves will often turn into links, and the webmasters will surely check out your site.
43. Write a testimonial for me. I’ll let you link to yourself in it. You can see other testimonials that people have left here.
44. Write and submit a press release. Sites like PRWeb will publish them and link to you.
45. Alert webmasters in your field when you write solid content that will be useful for their readers. Don’t bother webmasters by updating them on every little thing you add to your site. Alert them when you have authority articles.
46. Alert friends when you create something that will help them. If you’re helping them they should definitely give you some link love.
47. If you don’t have any friends, get some fast.
48. Write to help others. If you can help other people to find more success, you deserve a link from them. You will probably get one.
49. Mentor other aspiring bloggers. I help out quite a few friends and most of them have me on their blogroll. They also link to me from time to time, and read my site often. Some of them will probably get really big eventually and those links will pay off enormously!
50. Try to meet other bloggers offline. Every city has bloggers and other internet marketers. These relationships can lead to ‘mutual plugging’ and idea swapping.
51. Create surveys. A good survey can make a person (or a group of people) feel important and could lead to some free marketing from them.
52. Poll your readers. People like to participate in polls and are super interested in the outcomes. Many times they will link to the outcome post of a poll just because they participated in the poll.
53. Comment on online newspapers. Most of the links you make won’t have direct SEO benefit thanks to the “no follow” command, but the writers will follow the trail back to your site.
54. Interview other bloggers. Many bloggers want to be famous! They will jump at the chance to be interviewed. Add a page to your blog that let’s people in your field know that you are interested in interviewing them. Tell them how to sign up and they will. I can almost guarantee that they’ll be linking back to the interview once it’s published.
55. Cite the source of your information. This good will often sparks reciprocation. Webmasters and bloggers love to be talked about.
56. Use forums and discussion boards. I sometimes try to find something that people are really confused about. If you answer their question they will automatically start to wonder who you are. Most of the time I have to research the problem myself to be able to answer them. The best way to answer their question is by creating a short walkthrough on your site that teaches them. Show them where to find it and you have yourself a link. That technique will also work on the next few suggestions.
57. Ask your local, public library to link to you with their website.
58. Answer people’s questions on Yahoo! Answers. You are able to link to resources on other websites that will help answer people’s questions. If you don’t already have a resource on your site that will help answer a question, create one. Link to from Yahoo! Answers. You have a link, and some more valuable content for your site.
59. Answer questions on Google Groups. Very similar to the one for Yahoo! Answers.
60. Submit to free web directories. The biggie is DMOZ. (Don’t even bother unless you have at least 100 posts on your blog.) Directories are lists of thousands of sites. One of them should be you!
61. Submit to blog directories like BOTW. Blog directories are thousands of blogs, listed in categories.
62. Submit to paid directories. Don’t do it unless you have to budget. The biggie is Yahoo! Directory.
63. Write controversial content. Sometimes you can really get people talking by criticizing famous people and brands.
64. Write about celebrities. People eat that stuff up and if you write something that people don’t know, you will get links from all over the place.
65. Write about the leaders in your field. Tell others why you think they’re successful.
66. Attack the leaders in your field. (This one I would never do.) Write why they should do things differently. I’m sure I could get a load of links by attacking Darren Rowse, Shoemoney (Jeremy Schoemaker), John Chow, and Steve Pavlina, but I wouldn’t do it because I have too much respect for them. That said, I have to admit that I could get some serious traffic by getting some dirt on them or attacking their business practices.
67. Write in English. English is the major language of the internet and blog written in English cater to a much larger audience.
68. Install a text translator on your site. (I haven’t done this one yet but it’s one of my ideas for the near future.) Surely people that blog in other languages would tell their readers about www.mysite.com that has a version that they can more easily read. I would love to have a version of this site in Chinese, which is the second biggest language of the internet. It will eventually be the biggest.
69. Create a contact page with a contact form. If people don’t have to open up their email to get in touch with you, it will be easier for them to ask you for a link exchange.
70. Create a testimonial page. Allow people to link to themselves in their testimonials. Add your site to our list of sites that want testimonials.
71. Create a Wikipedia page about yourself or your business. Wikipedia links don’t count due to a “no follow” command, but you will gain some exposure that will surely lead to additional links.
72. Create a Squidoo page about yourself.
73. Join the Better Business Bureau – for this one you have to have a business!
74. Join local clubs that have websites. Maybe give them a few pointers for their site and find out if they list members. Include a link on your member’s page.
75. Check for local government directories – it should be easy to get into local, online listings.
76. Donate to an online charity. They usually list contributors. Make sure you donate using the name of your site.
77. Place an ad in Craigslist. (Craigslist is a very large, online classified site)
78. Market your site as a free resource for local businesses. I told an attorney friend of mine about this site so that he could get some promotional ideas for his company’s site. Sure enough he linked to me.
79. Better yet, hire a publicist. They can probably get you on the news so that lots of people and businesses can use you as a resource.
80. Hire a link building consultant. Andy Hagans is a great one. This one is down this far on the list because it costs $ and isn’t guaranteed.
81. Hire a starving student and pay them $8 an hour to do everything on this list for 8 hours a day.
82. Get some interns that you can teach to build links. Create an LLC called MyCompany Marketing, LLC. Set up an internship program with the marketing department at the local university or college. Get 2 students to work 4 hours a day doing everything on this list for free.
83. Get some interns to write for you. Start a second LLC called MyCompany Publishing, LLC. Set up an intership with the journalism department at the local college and get a few free interns (writers) for your blogs. That way you can start a few new blogs that you can use as valuable resources to get links from.
84. Start a few more blogs. You can create free blogs on Blogspot if you want. Give your main blog a link once in a while. There isn’t any reason to make 1,000 links with it, just link once in a while. Maybe you could even update the blogs once a week. Who knows, you might make some money with those as well.
85. Encourage your friends to start blogs. Some of my friends have started blogs and I have links from all of them. I actually didn’t really encourage them, but they asked me and it has worked out great for my blog.
86. Create images and tools that people can use on MySpace, FaceBook, and other social networking sites.
87. Link to your blog from your MySpace page. If you don’t have one, set one up. Try to get a lot of friends in there, because the more friends you have in MySpace, the more traffic your space will get.
88. Ask your friends to link to you from their MySpace pages. These links won’t be majorly valuable from an SEO standpoint, but could bring some extra visitors, which lead to additional links.
89. Create a new MySpace page for your site. Become friends with other pages like yours.
90. Create a WordPress template. I’m not a designer, but if I was I would create hundreds of these. If a person uses your template they will be linking to you with every page of their site. There are millions of pages in the world running WordPress.
91. Create a Mambo template. Mambo is a content management system like WordPress that allows users to create websites.
92. Hold and sponser a writing contest in your field with a giveaway to the winner. Make the contestants publish the article on their sites while linking to yours.

93. Create a certification program for sites in your field. Design a trophy that people can use to display on their sites if they pass the certification. Host the image. (This means that you will not allow them to download the trophy picture. They will just install a piece of code that you will give them that will reference the trophy picture from your site.) You need to save the image on your site and them use this code to give them:Insert the URL where your image is saved where it says, “yourimageurl”.
94. Buy links. You can email webmasters asking them to link to you in exchange for hard green. You can also use a service like Text Link Ads to purchase and rent links.
95. Rent links. Same as buying links except the links won’t be permanent. Usually you pay monthly for this type. Check out Text Link Ads for details.
96. Buy posts from other bloggers. You can offer to pay them directly to post about your site, or you can buy posts through services like Pay Per Post and ReviewMe.
97. Start a design company. Add the design service to your site. You can create small sites for individuals and people, adding designed-by links at the bottom of their pages.
98. Donate sites to non-profit organizations. Non-profits usually get a lot of links from government sites, and so they would be ideal to design for. Make sure to include a “design donated by MySite.com” at the bottom.
99. Setup blogs for other people. Make sure you include, “Designed by MySite.com” or “Inspired by MySite.com.” Help them to achieve success and their links will become a lot more valuable.
100. Help students that are taking HTML classes in college. Your help can probably be traded for ridiculously valuable .edu links on their student accounts. Make sure you link to their little student sites so they get indexed. You may want to link to them from another site you have, or from a forum. I’ve missed the boat on that one a few times with friends that I actually helped. Oops!
101. Donate some time every week to hold Q and A sessions for beginners in your area. They’ll link to you naturally, or you can ask them to.
102. Encourage friends to bring friends to Q and A sessions. Help them all out. You may get some good ideas yourself and some links from your group.

Ok maybe it’s not mysterious but how to get links to your website seems to be a common question among newbie webmasters and internet marketers, so I have decided to share 5 tips you can use to start building incoming links to your website.

Why is link building important?

There are 2 reasons, how many links your website has coming from other websites on the internet is one of the major ranking factors for all search engines. Second the more links you have on other sites, the more exposure you site will receive (meaning more traffic).

1. Create a list

People love lists for example lists of resources, tips, top 10’s and how to etc this will give other websites a reason to link to you. To put this tip in overdrive you could contact other sites in your niche and tell them about your article/ blog post, especially if you have linked to their site as part of a resource list. A list can have a massive viral effect if the information is useful to others in your market.

2. Submit articles

I know this is an oldie but it is still a very effective way of building links to your website. Other sites may publish your article especially if the articles are good. Also some article directories tend to rank well so you can use their authority with the search engines bringing in traffic for highly competitive keywords. The key here is to write a compelling resource box so the visitor clicks through to your site.

3. Social Bookmarking

Create accounts and bookmark the pages on your website or blog, this can be a tedious process as with most link building activities so using tools like socialposter.com and socialmarker.com will semi automate the process.

4. Use Free Blog Type Sites

There are many places you can create sites for free e.g. wordpress.com, blogger.com, squidoo.com, hubpages.com, wetpaint.com and the list could go on. Get some articles written and post them to the various sites this gives you the power to link to your main site using whatever keywords you want. Again this is another traffic generation tactic as your free sites will get traffic on their own.

5. Sign up for Google alerts

If you’re not familiar with Google alerts let me enlighten you. Google has a free service where they will email you news stories, articles and blog posts related to any keywords you specify. What you can do is have a scan through these alerts for any stories related to the topic of your site. Then you would check out the site the story or article came from and see if they have a way you can leave a comment directing people to your useful resource list in a very helpful manner of course

There are absolutely loads of ways you can build links to your website or blog, just use your imagination and make sure you allocate some time everyday to building incoming links you will be surprised how quickly your traffic will increase.

Sheila

Link Building via Twitter

Twitter is the current hot potato in the social media game at this moment in time. It has quickly and overwhelmingly become one of the most widely used micro-blogging platforms by individuals bored at home on a Friday night as well as for businesses looking to market their products and services. Users can post information, twit pics, retweets, follow trends and DING DING DING! Ring the bells! They can post links as often as they would like, allowing their direct followers to view. So, how can you turn these posts into links back to your site, ultimately resulting in increased website traffic? In the past few weeks I’ve seen many do it and I must say…I’m impressed! Let’s discuss shall we…

Momma I’m making New Friends on Twitter!

The first thing you need to do on twitter is to build your list of followers. Start by uploading your current email contacts into the Twitter system. Then, you can either manually add followers by searching for relevant keywords, or you can use a manual programs to rapidly build your list of followers. There are many sites out there that will allow you to speed this process up- for example twellow.com. Post a profile and watch your followers grow. Search for sites such as these online- there are many.

Post Quality Information and Material, NOT Promotional Crap!

As you build followers, you need to give them a reason to pay attention to your profile, to pass along valuable and interesting Tweets to their friends and most importantly to link to your URLs. Start by posting regular, interesting content and resources for your followers to read. Shy away from posting promotional material during the first 90 days of establishing your Twitter profile. Your ultimate goal is to build credibility with your list of followers, not to market to them. When you build credibility, people will naturally follow you and be interested in reading your links.

Your posts should include links of material you recently posted to your own website or blog, material of interest to your readers from the web in general (Use Google Alerts to find this daily), and links to interesting material you come across in your daily web browsing. Post several times per day to initially build your list of followers and to establish a point of credibility with them.

Generate Real Interest- What Did You Say About My Mom?!

Personally I start random arguments with my best friends on twitter and followers flock to the scene of the word torn bru ha. Hey people like a good fight lol. However if you don’t have a fun product or you would like to be taken a tad bit more serious – TWEET AND TWEET OFTEN! That’s the true name of the game. What? There’s an APP for that?? YES! YES! there is. Whether you are running on a blackberry or an iPhone there are dozens of tools out there for you to drag your wonderful twitter experience with you throughout the day. I believe I saw a random Twitter from a CEO the other day that stated he could not stop staring at the gentleman’s toupee in his meeting and he swore he was going to lose the deal because of it. Hilarious! He may have lost that deal but I sure as heck went online to check out his site chocked-full-o-milkshakes to lose weight. I wonder how many others did the same. Download an app such as Twitterfon or find a few others that may work for your phone choice and get to tweeting.

I’m Always Online and I’m Always Sharing

You can set up a mass amount of tweets to go out online when you are not around on a tool called tweetlater.com and so much more. Who said you have to be around to be online. I’m just saying BE ONLINE!

These are just a few twitter tips I felt like passing along and you can find a slew of 140 cool twitter tools at http://mashable.com/2008/05/24/14-more-twitter-tools/. I may be back later to rant a bit more- or I may not. Continue these patterns daily over time, and not only will your list of followers grow, but so will the links to your website. Establish a presence on Twitter and Tweet away to build links- Happy Tweeting !

I see a lot of articles telling people how to make money online. Most of the time they are very generalized – “Make Money Selling Ad Space”, but you don’t know where to go to do this. There are some really easy ways to make money online. I’m going to share with you a couple of the sites I make money with every single month. All I had to do was sign up and add some code to my site. For the 2 little text link ads I have on the right side of my blog I make about $25 a month. If you have 2 or 3 blogs you can sign each one up add the code and make money. Not only does text link ads allow you to make easy money you can also purchase advertising and get your links on tons of relevant sites for a really great price. Right now they are running a great promotion, Get a starter kit with $100 in free text links.

Another EASY way to earn a constant chunk of change at the beginning of each month? Adgitize – I kept seeing adgitize advertised all over the place for about 6 months before I finally got smart and signed up. Not only will you increase the traffic to your blog but you can very easily earn an extra $40 every single month with very little effort.

Ok – so far this is about $75 to $100 paid into my paypal account just for adding some code to my site. If you don’t sign up for these then maybe you just don’t want or need any extra money (yeah, right). What you have to remember about a lot of these sites where you can make money for advertising is that you can also use these same sites to advertise your site – building links and traffic everyday. You can always take the money you earn with these sites and put it back into advertising your site. This is what I do with the money I earn at CMF Ads – I have around $25 in my account there and I can either request a cashout or buy more advertising with it.

Another way to make money with your blog is to create advertising space that you can sell directly. Create a new page titled Advertise. Go to paypal and set-up different buttons for the advertising you will offer (i.e., $30 for a month, $125 for a review, etc.) Visit my “Advertise” page for an example. The difference with this advertising is that you have to go out and sell it, (joining forums is a good way) but, you can make a good amount of extra cash this way. It’s important to have a way that people can purchase advertising directly through your site. I have been on many sites who have a donate button but don’t have any way to purchase advertising. Offer something for money, a text link or banner ad – if I want to give money to a site I would rather do it by purchasing advertising from the owner than to just donate money (unless it’s for a specific cause).

Link building allows you to establish relevant inbound links to your website, which in turn increases search engine rankings and helps you get traffic.

If you aren’t familiar with the different methods people use to increase link popularity and get traffic, the first thing you need to know is that not every link building method is considered acceptable. In fact, some of the methods used to build link popularity are considered so unethical that they can actually get you in trouble with the various search engines.

To help you differentiate between what is ethical and what is not, here is a list of the most common link building methods used to get traffic:

Social Bookmarking

There has been a lot of discussion lately in regards to using social bookmarking as a way to get traffic and increase link popularity. Some people think that this link building technique borders on unethical.

The truth is that it depends on how you utilize social bookmarking sites. If you are an active member of a social bookmarking community who posts links to a personal website and other relevant sites to improve link popularity for everyone, you are doing nothing wrong. If, on the other hand, you create an account and repeatedly submit your own links and nothing else to get traffic, you are participating in spam-like behavior.

Spamming

Spamming can sometimes get traffic to your website, but it is not the best way to build link popularity. Most of the search engines frown upon spamming and have the ability to catch inexperienced spammers within a month or two.

The following link building techniques are considered unethical spamming by the major search engines: participation in unrelated and centralized link farms, automatically generated doorway pages, and false redirects.

Article Submission

Manual and automated article submission is another link building technique that has garnered proven results over the years. Article submission is widely thought to be an ethical way to build link popularity and get traffic. Nevertheless, there are exceptions to the rule.

For example, article submission that is fully automated but not targeted is usually considered spam. It is also a huge waste of time when compared to other link building strategies. If you want to get traffic and increase link popularity, you must submit articles to the right directories.

Buying Links

Search engines often advise against buying backlinks as a way to improve link popularity and get traffic. The reason is because it cheats their ranking system and is therefore considered unethical. Even so, there are plenty of website owners who employ this link building technique and reap great rewards.

If you want to give this link building strategy a try, the key is to start slowly by buying only a few backlinks. Buying 1,000 links in one day looks suspicious. You will also want to be careful as to where you buy your links from. Ten quality backlinks will help you increase link popularity and get traffic; 100 poorly regarded backlinks will not.

Your signature file (that spot at the end of your forum posts and your emails) – is prime real estate. Are you using it to the fullest?

Do you put any thought into your signature? You need to put as much thought into your signature lines as you would a paid advertisement. Your signature file has huge potential to work for you, don’t waste this space.

Of course, if you’re posting on forums, the most important thing is your actual message. Don’t attach your signature file to anything that will reflect poorly on your business. In emails, if you’re sending around jokes that are a little risque, then think twice about attaching your URL if it’s not appropriate.

1 – Give people a reason to click on your URL - How can you entice viewers to click?

Your signature file should capture attention and create interest. It should always be clear and direct in stating the benefits your program offers.

2. Don’t Write a Novel – Make your signature file short and catchy. A long, drawn-out signature file is sure to be ignored. And, a boring one will be, too. Stick to one or two URLs, even if you have 30 or 40 websites. Any more than that will dilute your branding and effectiveness.

3. Don’t Confuse – When writing your sig file, remember that a confused mind always says “no”. Don’t go crazy in your signature file with too many links or options. Be clear and direct about the benefits of your program so anyone and everyone reading it can see exactly how your product or service can help them.

Don’t assume readers know as much as you do about your business. Don’t talk jargon. Some terms or ideas in your industry may be over the heads of potential customers. Oftentimes I read ads and have no idea what in the heck they are selling, or why I’d need it. Make sure to state your benefits in simple words and grammar so that anyone who isn’t in your industry can understand them. For instance, everyone has skin, but not everyone knows what an epidermis is. Make it simple

4. Snag them - Once a reader does click through, do you have a way to capture their contact info so you can stay in touch? If not, get your newsletter sign-up box ready to collect those interested visitors. Don’t lose that potential customer.

Offer something free to collect their email. Offering a discounted item or freebie (such as a free e-book) is always a good idea.

You may be wasting PRIME opportunities to get visitors to your site if you aren’t putting as much thought into your sig line as you would invest writing paid ads. Try some new wording and watch your click-through rate rise.

If you’ve got a website you’re probably always looking for another link to add to it. Not only do links help build your Google PageRank (PR), relevant links can increase your placement in search results and of course, the more links you have pointing to your website, the more likely it is that someone will find you while they’re on another site. All important things to the survival of any online business.

It’s hard to ignore PageRank when you’re looking for new links. Whether you’re building links by submitting articles, press releases, buying text links, or exchanging links, it’s tempting to look only for sites that have a high PR.

For one thing, links from pages with a high PR can increase your PR as well. For another, websites with a high PR are often thought to be a little more credible than sites with a low PR. Obviously, others have visited this site before you and have thought it was worthwhile to link to it from their own websites. Building links from pages with no or a low PR might easily be thought of as a waste of time.

However, if you’re avoiding sites that have a low PR, you could be missing out on some good linking opportunities. Don’t forget that every site started out with no PR. Over time, the site you’re looking at today might become a PR 4, 5, or 6.

Also, PageRank is known to be a little fickle. What is normally a site with a high PR could suddenly drop to a 0 or 2 for a reason only Google knows, and then jump back up again. You might just be visiting on an off day.

Finally, although Google is constantly updating its algorithm to give us the most reliable results it can, some site owners are just as constantly finding ways to work around it and build a high PR without following the rules. A higher PR does not necessarily mean one site is more credible than another.

There are some other ways to help you measure the credibility, importance and potential of a site. Alexa, http://www.alexa.com , can give you specific traffic details about the site you’re looking at. Marketleap, http://www.marketleap.com, will tell you where that site’s links are really coming from.

The most important question, though, is does it make sense for you to have a link, an article, or press release on the website you’re looking at? Does it have good content that’s relevant to your own site? Will the people visiting that site be interested in your link? If you can answer yes to these questions, the PageRank of that website shouldn’t matter to you at all. You should have a link on that website just because it’s a good idea for your business.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEXT GOOGLE PAGE RANK UPDATE??!!!

Another awesome post from digital point forums. Please visit Mr Kumar at SEO Firm.

Link Building can definitely be an extremely difficult task if you want to take it on based on purely human labor to go out and request for links, whether they are one way or reciprocal.

Here I am trying to bring few tips and few resources of link building which you may find worth to have a look

Submit to Web Directories:
Do slow and continuous directory submissions for your site. This is an important long term work and solution for any site. Start doing directory submission from the very first day you site is up. Here are few free, non-reciprocal directories:

http://www.dmoz.org 9
http://www.lii.org/pub/htdocs/home.htm 8
http://www.femina.com 7
http://www.gogreece.com 7
http://www.sacentral.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm 7
http://www.worldhot.com/ 7
http://www.123india.com/ 7
http://www.elib.org/ 7
http://www.ezilon.com/ 6
http://www.epooch.com/ 6
http://www.christiansunite.com/ 6
http://www.toronto1.biz/ 6
http://www.canadianeh.com 6
http://www.aardvark.co.za 6
http://www.nzs.com/ 6
http://www.aigam.com 6

I have a long list of directories. See list of free, non reciprocal directories.
(I am listing few sites here to make sure this thread does not go very lengthy)

Reciprocal Link Building:
Contacting webmasters of relevant sites requesting for have a link exchange. Write personalized emails to request for link exchange. It will be better if you write 2-3 good things about their site and tell them how link exchange will benefit both parties. Also, mentioning good qualities and PageRank is always good idea.

Do not forget to ask and give (1) URL of link, (2) Title of link, and (3) Description of Link

Now, main thing is How to find good link partner. Search google and other search engines for terms like: “keyword reciprocal links”, “keyword links”, “Keyword link exchange”, “keyword link submit”, “Keyword link partner” etc.

I came across few tools for searching link partner:
Link Partner Finder – from 4th media.
Find Link Partners – from zebonline

Few other tools which you may find helpful are:

Link Popularity Check – quick and easy to use web tool from Marketleap.
Arelis Link Builder – reciprocal links solution from Axandra/Voget Selbach Enterprises GmbH
Zeus Internet Robot – automatic reciprocal link generator and link directory creator from Cyber-robotics.
OptiLink Software is a link analysis program that reveals how top ranked pages achieved their search engine rankings.

Article Submissions:
Yeah, write quality articles which have some interesting and useful stuff, and submit them to free article directories.

You need to put link back to your site. Let your article do double duty- (1) bring traffic and (2) link building. You need to make your keywords anchor of link to your site.

To be very frank, I see quick results when I succeed to place my 2-3 articles on high PageRank and high traffic sites. Some times we need to submit article like submission to directories and sometimes we need to request webmaster via e-mail. You need to tell them why they should put your article on their site.

I have well refined list of article directories with me, and I can share the list with you. Few examples of article directories are:

Link from .org and .edu sites:
The education and organization sites are considered more valued sites and links coming from those sites are valuable link. You need to search those sites.

Just find out some forums and blogs of the organizations and education body which have content relevant to your site. Make blog comments and put links in them, make sure your comment is genuine and not spam. Read the whole topic and find something to comment on the topic… job is done.

Same way leave your links in forums signature. There is few hot topics on forum signature telling importance at seo point of view and traffic point of view. Go ahead and do it, you’ll make valuable links.

You can do the blog comment and forum sign at non .org and no .edu sites.

Social Book marking Site Submission:
This is somewhat new thing we in industry. Now a day’s people are taking interest in social bookmarking. So, I thought I should start the service of social bookmarking. Yeah, it is worthy enough to pay someone to do social bookmarking.

For those who are new to it, in social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources, which they find useful. These lists are accessible to the public for their views and comments. This became a great seo technique now.

There are lots of reasons why inbound links are beneficial to your site. First of all, links bring traffic. If there are a lot of fingers out there on the ‘net, pointing the way back to your site, there’s a much bigger chance that people will follow those and come to your site, especially if these links are from sites where your audience already gathers.

Second, the search engines will rank you higher if they see lots of inbound links. They equate inbound links with importance and popularity. And if they think you’re important and popular, you rank higher.

Finally, if a lot of other sites and pages are linking to yours, then there are more opportunities for the search engine “spider” programs to find you, and index you. You can’t be found on a search engine if the search engine doesn’t know you exist! One of the best ways to get indexed is to get lots of inbound links!

Previously, I’ve talked about quick ways to get inbound links, then other ways that took a bit more effort. In this article, we’ll talk about some of the slower, but most effective ways of getting inbound links. These methods take the most time, effort, and creativity, but in the long run, they draw the most traffic and the most search engine value.

1. Submit to DMOZ

DMOZ.org is a directory of websites. It’s indexed and maintained by humans, rather than robots, as a free service to the users of the ‘net. One of the nice things about getting your site listed in DMOZ is that not only does it provide a very valuable inbound link to your site, but it also gets you listed in lots of other search engines (they often index the sites found here).

It’s quick and easy to sign up (you have to follow their specific instructions), but since it’s maintained and indexed by humans, it takes a long time to be included. Submit to this one early in your site’s life so as to maximize effectiveness.

2. Get someone else to write about you

Some time ago, as I was starting up a website for a game I’ve been designing, I noticed in my traffic statistics some clickthroughs from a blog I’d never heard of before. I jumped to the blog and found out, to my surprise, that he’d found my game and reviewed it! And his blog review was drawing traffic to my site. More surprising was the fact that months later, I was still getting traffic from it, even though the review was buried in his archives.

If you can get someone else to write about you, that’s a really cool way to get a really great inbound link. In fact, it’s kind of the “holy grail” of website promotions. It has the most value because, since it’s written into the content of the other person’s article, the search engines give it more credibility. The search engines give it more weight still because it’s not reciprocal.

Add to that the fact that the other site’s readers become curious about your site through the “endorsement” of the site they visited (who might be one of their favorite and trusted sites). They click through to see what the fuss is about.

The challenge in getting someone else to write about you is, of course, having something at your site worth writing about. Sometimes it can take a while to think of that uniqueness, that angle. Be creative and think about it, and it will come to you.

3. Write some really good stuff at your site

In his book, “Purple Cow”, Seth Godin talks about how to get people talking about your site. He says that if you want people to remark about you, your site needs to be “remarkable”. So, you want to have some content at your site that’s worth talking about. Think of your audience. What do they want to know? What are they searching for? What problem do your products solve? Write some information that people are looking for and people need. Don’t be afraid to even be a bit controversial. That can often draw attention and traffic.

These strategies, combined with the quicker ones in the previous articles will, over time, build up a catalog of inbound links that will draw the traffic to your site. This traffic will be targeted and qualified as your potential customers.

Here are 15 best link building ways that promise to bounce your site to the top ten search results of Google or any other major search engine. Read them; understand them; and make sure that you use them to taste web success.

1. Post your links to some good and relevant directories. This is the easiest and quickest way to get links. But, remember; many reputed directories don’t permit links to internal pages.

2. Have a few complementary sites that support your main website. If the former obtains a rank, contact other webmasters for a 3 or 4 way link building. But, never link your main site from the supplementary one or vice versa; or else the search engine may catch your pattern. Also, ensure that all your sites are under different IP.

3. Include a blog in your main site for obtaining plenty of natural links.

4. Submit quality content articles that talk about your product or service to about 3-5 relevant web directories. They are one of the best link building ways of obtaining one way links, plus attracting traffic to your site.

5. Contact various webmasters and submit your articles to them for one way link.

6. Request links from your business acquaintances or search for local sites.

7. Register your site with the Better Business Bureau. It builds credibility.

8. Create pages in Hubpages, Squidoo, and other such sites to obtain links.

9. Create a list on various topics and put your link with some respectable sites that are related to your business. There are many sites that allow you to do this.

10. Bookmark those pages of your site that are rich in quality content.

11. Issue an RSS feed and organize it, if possible.

12. Associate with forums and post your articles in it for links. Though most of the reputed forums provide NOFOLLOW links, ye they still help.

13. Purchase some high class text links from niche directories and blogs.

14. Use your creativity and create a page or tool that can be used by visitors. For example, create a unique calculator. Let visitors associate with the tool or use it in their own website. This helps you obtain lots of one way links, depending on the quality of the tool.

15. Provide something FREE! The whole world loves free things. This is perhaps the best link building tactic. Such an offer will lure many links towards your site. Search for website designing companies that provide free templates. These templates help get the sites a large number of one way links.

Still thinking about the best link building way? Stop! Pick a few from the ones stated above and watch your site enjoy a ranking among the top ten on Google search!

There are several things you can do to strengthen your internet marketing business and link building is certainly one of them. Although it can be a difficult method for search engine optimization, it can also be one of the most valuable pieces to your success. When done correctly, you will receive more traffic to your site than you know what to do with.

Link building consists of getting other sites to place your web site link on their site. In return, you usually have to place their link on your site. Sometimes you can find one way links, which are by far the best for you. This consists of a site putting your link on their site without you having to do so in return. Typically this is done because you have done a good deed for them in some manner.

The key to link building is finding quality internet marketing businesses to exchange links with. To benefit from link trades you typically will want to exchange with sites that have a Google page rank equal to or greater than your site.

Trading links with other sites, however, is not the only method to link building. If you have the money to spend, buying links can be beneficial to your business because you can purchase according to quality. Obviously it will cost you more for better quality links, but you will know exactly what you are getting. You just have to determine if it is worth it to you to spend money when there are so many free methods available.

Another option is through article writing. You may not have realized it yet, but writing articles is a great way to build links and get backlinks pointing to your site. By writing an article with a resource box included, you will have your web site link within the resource box. This gives people an opportunity to easily be directed to your site if they like your article. After writing an article, submit it to as many article directories as you can and watch the traffic flow in.

Lastly, writing testimonials can be a way of getting your name and link out on the web as well. By writing testimonials for your web hosting company, article writer, program coordinator, or anybody else that has helped you, you are benefiting them as well as yourself. This is a great way to potentially get linked with a large web site.

Link building is a vital piece to having success with your internet marketing business. It can drastically increase your traffic volume in a short period of time. The more methods you use, the better opportunity you have of people seeing your link on the web.

Link building is the process of getting websites to link to your homepage, or one of your website’s internal pages. An example link would be me telling you that this blog is written by Collin LaHay. The link to my blog’s homepage with the text “collin lahay” tells Google that this site is about Collin LaHay, and that this blog deserves to rank for a Google search of “collin lahay.” The more websites that you can get to link to yours, the higher you will rank in the search engine for that term, and the higher your Google Pagerank will be. Not only will you increase your websites rank for the term that the other sites link to yours with, but you will rank for a lot of other keywords once your pagerank increases.

In simple terms, the more websites that link to yours the more search engine visitors you will receive.

What is the Link Building Cookbook?
The Link Building Cookbook is a guide for webmasters to quickly find websites that they can get to link to their websites. In a nutshell, this guide provides hundreds of places to get to link to you so that you can get more search engine traffic in a lot less time than building links the standard way.

The Link Building Cookbook is updated very frequently, and features thousands of places where normal webmasters would not have thought they could build links to their website. This guide helps you find “the diamonds in the rough,” or in other terms, the best places to build links without paying heavy amounts of money.

Disclaimer
Before you begin your link building campaign, I want everyone to know that some of these techniques may be considered blackhat, greyhat, or some even border line unethical. Due to the nature of this frequently updated guide and the fact that these sites are normally used for purposes other than link building, I make no guarantee that these links will be permanent or that any of the sites mentioned in this guide are still online. For example, if you are reading a 4-6 month old post about a site that you can build links off of, the site may have shutdown since then but for the sake of this guide, I will leave all the previous posts mentioned.

I personally believe that since many people are using these secret underground techniques for maximizing their profits, I will show the rest of the world them freely on my blog. Feel free to copy any segment of the Link Building Cookbook onto your own blog, so long as proper credit is given.

April 6th Update
I have sorted the list by which links provide “nofollow” links, and which links are “dofollow” links. The dofollow links are to be used for raising your ranks in the search engines, as well as bringing your website new visitors. The “nofollow” link section is to be used only for getting new visitors to your websites and for branding purposes.
