The old adage, “Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket,” is especially true in today’s economic climate for any business. Just as you would never let all of your income be derived from one or two clients, creating a diversified business where you have multiple streams of income is the key to success with an online service business. If one income stream tapers off for a time, you are adequately covered by the others. I have been doing this very successfully in my business for the last 8 years.

Where things become confusing for your prospective clients is if you have income streams that are all over the map and serve different target markets, like a career coach who buys, renovates, and flips homes on the side. It’s quite challenging to run a business like this because you’re actually running two different businesses in this example and the streams don’t relate well to each other at all. I recently experienced a situation where a career coach I’ve been following emailed his list about real estate development, which really annoyed me. I’m not interested in real estate development, nor do I expect to hear from that person on that topic.

The easiest way to create multiple streams of revenue in a service business is to create off-shoots of what you’re already doing serving the same target market in your core business. This has been referred to as “going deep” with your customers and providing them with additional products and services rather than “going wide” into other markets. In this way, you can create a great client transition process that would provide multiple ways to serve the same clients. Believe me, it’s easier to continue to sell to people who’ve already purchased from you than to try and cultivate new clients.

Here are 6 quick ways to stabilize your business with multiple streams of income:

 1. Consulting/Coaching. Can you work with clients in a more in-depth fashion than you do currently? If so, you may want to add consulting or coaching to your income stream mix. Or, if you can help colleagues in the same industry grow their businesses, coaching or consulting in your own industry may provide the additional revenue stream you have been seeking.

 2. Done for You Services. If you’re a coach or a consultant, adding done-for-you-services are a great option for members of your target market who don’t want any part of doing something themselves. So, if you’re a career coach who routinely helps clients polish their resumes, perhaps you could add a done-for-you resume service where you create a polished resume for your clients.

 3. Affiliate Marketing. I love making money from recommending products and services that I already use in my business. This is an easy sale for me, as I’m an affiliate only for products and services that I have used or that have come highly recommended from a colleague that I respect. There’s nothing sweeter than getting my monthly PayPal notifications of payments from various affiliate
programs to which I belong.

 4. Membership/Continuity programs. If you have a great deal of content lying around in your hard drive, a membership site or continuity program may be in your future. This is an effective way to create a recurring stream of income in your business.

 5. Teaching/Training/Speaking. Are others interested in learning the “how-to” of what you do? Then adding teaching, training, or speaking to your revenue stream in the form of teleclasses, live events, or webinars will add a healthy income stream to your business.

 6. Information Products. Whether you have developed your own or sell PLR (Private Label Rights) products, the sale of information products can be a lucrative revenue addition to your business. Developing products that are sold at different price points serve as a reasonable price alternative to help your target market solve a problem if they aren’t able to hire you for 1:1 assistance.

Take some time to determine how you can “go deep” with your target market and add additional revenue streams that complement what you’re already doing. You’ll soon discover a sense of relief to have the extra income should circumstances cause your income to drop in another part of your business.

Once you’ve mastered your online marketing system and you’re growing your list on a daily basis, this is a good time to then set about creating additional offerings for your subscribers. This is where you start to look at your Product & Marketing Funnel and see where the gaps are and where new products can fit.

If you’re like most solo service professionals you’ll have something at the top (i.e. the widest part) of your funnel, which is usually your free taste, and then you’ll have something at the bottom (i.e. the narrowest part) of your funnel, which is usually your most expensive one-on-one services, but you won’t have anything in-between.

This is where you need to create products at different price points so that your clients and customers can experience your services and expertise without having to invest in your top (most expensive) service, but they want more than you are offering at the ‘free’ level.

A great first info product to create is one that sits at the second level within your Product & Marketing Funnel; somewhere between $1 and $50.

So, here is the step-by-step guide on how to create that all-important first paid offering.

Step 1 Host a Free Teleclass

Not only is this a great way to build your list, but it also exposes your audience to your expertise. You get to interact with your target market via the teleclass and they are able to ask you questions right there on the call.

Step 2 Record Your Teleclass

In addition to this being a great incentive to getting more sign-ups (if a registrant is not able to make it to the live teleclass they know that they’ll be able to get hold of the information afterwards via the recording), but this is where you’ll turn your free teleclass into your first paid info product.

Step 3 Create an Accompanying Guide or Special Report

Using the notes you prepared for your teleclass, turn these into a guide to accompany your teleclass. Or turn your notes into a special report and sell the report as the paid product and offer the teleclass recording as a bonus.

Step 4 Create a Workbook

If you also provided instructions or how-to information as part of your free teleclass, take that information and create an additional workbook. A workbook is a simple document that will allow your customer/client to make notes, write down their ideas, or plan out how they’re going to implement the how-to information that you shared with them on the teleclass.

Step 5 Bundle It All Together

Now that you have your teleclass recording, and you’ve created an accompanying guide/ebook and/or workbook, bundle all this information together to offer as a paid product at the second level within your funnel i.e. between the $1 and $50 price range.

Step 6 Create a Sales Page and Shopping Cart Link

You now need to create a sales page for your product, and associated shopping cart link. It is also a great customer service feature to create an autoresponder so that you can follow-up with your customers to check that they are happy with their purchase and are implementing the information you shared with them.

Step 7 Promote to Your List

Once you have your product all set up (Step 5), and created the sales page (Step 6) it’s time to promote it to your list and make sales! This is the exciting part! Include some teaser information in your newsletter leading up to the launch of your product, and once you’re ready to take sales send a solo mailing announcing the launch of your product. A solo mailing is much more effective than including the announcement as part of your regular newsletter.

After the initial launch continue to promote your product through your newsletter; promote it on your blog; and tell all your social networks about your product.

Hello I guess most of you reading this are no different to Sam & I, we have seen the opportunity of developing a business online and either changing our lifestyle and/or just making some extra cash, but one of the problems is as the internet expands more & more people are coming online.

In the last few years, it’s true to say the number of people making money online has increased greatly. However, what this also means is that you’ve got more people trying to get a piece of the internet pie. In order to stay ahead of the competition, you’ll have to take advantage of every method available to turn traffic into money.

What’s Your Goal from your Internet Marketing Activity?

While most of us love our niche and enjoy our work, let’s just admit that the bottom line is making money. Sometimes it takes a long time before you start to see profits from your hard work, but if you’ve got the drive to succeed, you’ll stay the course, and this is the key, certainly we have had a number of false starts, doing a bit then packing up for a while & coming back to it – it’s about staying the course and having faith that by doing so it will come good. For Sam & I, this is the year we are devoting significant time on a weekly basis and being consistent.

Get ‘Real’ Over Traffic

Traffic is the core basic of making any money online. Traffic is your customers, and without customers you don’t make sales. Every visitor to your site is another person who gets to see what your offering. The more people visit your site and have a look, the higher your chance of monetizing it. But not only that you want the right kind of ‘targeted’ traffic – those who you already know have an interest in your niche.

The whole point of starting an online business is to see a profit. You’ve put your money and hard work into it, and you want to be repaid. If you’ve got lots of steady traffic, you increase your chances of seeing that money. The way to make money online is to monetize this traffic.

Monetizing With Advertising

One way to monetize is with advertising. There’s advertising called PPC, or pay per click advertising. Go over and check out Google Adsense, sign up for a free account, this works on the basis that Google put ads on your page that advertise similar products or services. When one of your visitors clicks on this link, you get paid a commission by Google, The amount you get paid is very small, but it can be enough to provide a steady stream of income if you get a huge amount of traffic and you have a number of sites.

Google Adsense some few years ago was massive with many successful high profile internet marketers making a fortune, now it’s not quite what it was but there’s still many internet marketers doing very nicely thank you very much – consider it as just one of the methods to monetize your site and its traffic .

Stop & Consider This First

A word of caution here though, don’t confuse your visitor – if you really want them to join your list then that should be the primary function of your site. The more opportunities a visitor has to click away from the ‘main opportunity’ of your site, the less chance they’ll sign up to you list if that’s the ‘primary function’ – so consider this before going the route of adsense.

As an example my start internet marketing online site, It’s function is to offer credible unique content to people starting out, I want visitors to join my list – that’s it, so for me I don’t want the distraction of Google adsense.

However my learn herbal remedies site is a totally different ‘made for adsense’ site. Yep there’s good strong information there, but no product to buy just purely adsense to click on.

The key to making money with PPC is to have lots of traffic but it must also be targeted. You need to use every method available to get back links and raise your sites rank in the search engines. You’ll also have to have valuable content that will keep people coming back for more. Then, when you put ads that are relevant to your niche on your site, you can get paid when people click on them.

Affiliate Marketing

Another way to make money with your site is obviously affiliate marketing. For those of you reading this and just starting out this means joining an affiliate program. You advertise your affiliate’s products on your site, and when one of your visitors clicks through your link & buys or goes to their site, using your link and buys, you get a cut of the value of the sale. Affiliate programs keep records of every transaction and pay you out accordingly.

The percentage of the sale that you get can be pretty significant. With adsense, you’ll see small gains made over a long period of time. Affiliate marketing will get you pretty worthwhile commission sales because some affiliate programs offer commissions 50%, 60% and more of the order value. It all depends on their pricing scheme. If affiliate marketing is a way you choose to proceed check out at sites like Click bank.

Sell Information Products

The last 10 years have seen a huge increase in people buying E-books and other online products. E-books aim to offer useful information, and many target the ‘how to’ area of niches. The major difference is that they are digital products, available to download and not hard copy books. While just a few years ago people were wary of buying digital products that didn’t exist in any physical form, these days it’s the norm.

You can create an E-book, a video series, audio files or any other medium that you want. Choose a topic that helps people with some problem related to your niche. With the easy technology these days that we have for info product creation, it takes little technical know-how and almost no money.

On your site or through your newsletter or opt-in list, you can sell your information product to your customers. This is a great way to create a passive stream of income. Once you’ve got the product created, the whole system can be automated, so there’s nothing you have to do.

The Internet is always changing. To stay competitive online, you need to keep current and utilize every method available. These are just a few ways that you can turn traffic into cash on your website. Try them all and find one that suits you best.

Google Adsense is a great way to make money from advertising revenue. I love it because Google does the selling.

They do all of the technical stuff too! You place code on your web pages and they match advertisers to the theme of the web page you have built. Whenever someone clicks on one of these ads you make money.

How much money? Let’s just say that Google pays out hundreds of millions of dollars to affiliate marketers just like you and me.

So how can you make money with Google Adsense?

1. Follow Google’s rules. The Google Adsense Policy lists their policies in regards to what you can and can not do as an affiliate for them.

They do a great job of protecting their advertisers by keeping the integrity of AdSense very high. Click fraud is a big no-no. Never entice your website visitors to click on the ads either and do not click on your own ads either. This will get you banned from making money with them.

2. Focus every page on the ads. I really like to use WordPress blogs as websites. There are some excellent plug-ins available that make it very easy to implement the ads into your pages.

Do not clutter your pages with banners for other programs. Keep the pages simple so the ads stand out and your will get more clicks on them.

3. Add fresh quality content. What you are doing is developing info site with Google ads.

Make sure the content you add to each page offers value to the reader and is unique. Because they want to give their searchers the good experience your site provides when you do this Google will reward your site with high rankings.

4. Focus on keywords. Build web pages around 1 keyword phrase for each page you build. Google loves this because it makes it easier to rank your pages for that phrase.

5. Target keywords that pay the most. You really are looking at targeting 5 to 10 phrases per site. Again only 1 phrase per page. Build niche websites around keywords that will earn you the most money.

We now know that Google pays out 68% of the advertising revenues back to you and me. You can find info online on estimating the EPC for a keyword phrase. The free Google Adwords tool is one of them.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when building a website that focuses on Google Adsense as your primary income stream. It is a great program to make money with and will continue to be as long as Google is the #1 search engine in the world.

Perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions for webmasters has to be: How do I monetize my web pages? How do I earn revenue from my online content?

As a full time online marketer and webmaster, this is a question I have considered many times and found my own answers through many years of trial and error. Of course, I have taken the passive route in my quest for that online income. This means instead of producing my own products, I market and promote affiliate goods and services. I do no direct selling on any of my websites. I collect no money and I don’t even have a payment program or system in place.

All my income and commissions come from referring traffic or clients to the affiliate companies which I promote. Totally passive.

These companies do all the selling, delivery of products, customer support, everything… I just get a small percentage for having referred that customer or client. This passive method has worked extremely well for me but keep in mind, selling your own products and services will be much more lucrative since you will receive the majority of the income instead of just a small commission or referral fee.

However, if you’re like me and want a more “hands-off,” passive income from your web content, here are some of the things I have learned over the years. You might find some of these tips helpful in your own monetization. I have placed these tips in the form of a “q and a” format…

1. Should I use Google Adsense?

While placing Google Adsense ads on your site or blog is very easy, the rates are extremely low. You can make 10 to 100 times more by using affiliate links instead of these ads. For example, for one Adsense click you could get anywhere from a few cents to several dollars, whereas with an affiliate program you can get from $10 to $100+ for a click which turns into a sale. However, Google is one of the most respected and reliable companies on the web. They pay on time and should not be ignored. I have used Adsense for years mainly because you can’t always find affiliate programs for some content and besides, you can place both affiliate links and Google Adsense on your pages.

2. Should I use Amazon?

Another very simple way to monetize your content is to place Amazon products and referral links on your pages. Amazon’s referral rates are slightly better than Google Adsense especially if you have high volume sales, but they are still lower in general. However, I have found users tend to really trust Amazon and buy from them more frequently and more often so conversion rates are much higher than any other affiliate program I have used. For this reason alone, Amazon should be on your list if you want to earn money from the web. I have been using them for years and find building your links is really easy. So too is building whole “A Stores” on a particular topic or line of products.

3. What is ClickBank and Should I use It?

ClickBank is one of the biggest affiliate networks for downloadable products such as ebooks and software. They pay some of the largest commissions. 40% to 50% or more is very common. Very reliable. I have been using them for years and you should include some ClickBank products on your pages. Please note that ClickBank does deduct a small percentage of your commissions to cover any returns, but it also means you don’t have any dropped commissions – once you make a sale, you will get paid for it.

4. What are Affiliate Networks?

Affiliate networks, like Commission Junction and LinkShare, are major players in the online affiliate world. These affiliate networks represent thousands of companies which offer products and services that webmasters can promote. They handle all sales transactions and send out your commission checks each month. Most of my affiliate programs are through these affiliate networks with CJ being the top one mainly because they have excellent feedback and tracking.

5. How do I Find a Profitable Affiliate Product or Service?

Regardless of what you’re promoting, you must be very careful to pick quality products that are closely related to your content. These two factors will mainly determine your conversion rates, although product ads and display images do play a small part. If you use a network like Commission Junction, they will indicate which company is making the most sales and will also tell you which ads are getting the highest return with the actual dollar amount (EPC earnings per 100 clicks). I always use this data when picking which companies and products I promote on my sites.

6. Why do I Need to Create Different Income Streams?

The real beauty of running an online business is that you can have many different income sources which pay you each month. You should plan on having at least 10 to 20 income streams. If one should dry up, you will have the others to depend upon. Once you have quality traffic coming to your website, it is just a matter of placing different affiliate links on your pages. I like including at least three or four different companies on a page, this way you can easily create different income streams for the same page. Don’t just rely on one company or product. Have many different affiliate links and companies throughout your site.

7. What Should be Your Main Strategic Objective?

Don’t make this mistake – instead of making one sale and getting paid for it once, pick products and services which give you a recurring or residual income. You do the same promotion and work but get paid for years to come. I am still earning income on sales I made five years ago. This will significantly improve your bottom line or your return on investment. Products and services which have a monthly billing element are good candidates for residual income… such as web hosting, autoresponder services, telecommunications and so on. Don’t rule out forming partnerships with businesses in the same niche as your website. You might be surprised at the response you get.

Effectively monetizing your web content will largely determine if you succeed or not, so try some of the tips above. Of course, there are many other ways to monetize your traffic such as selling direct ads and links on your pages. The list above is not my full list but does include some of my top-performing programs and should also work for you and your web content.

There’s no doubt that the topic about making money with a blog is very extensive, all of which is made more complex by the huge number of people expressing their own opinions.

I will give my own opinion but I will do it in such a way that it is concise and easy to understand. Of course, there will be sections which I will not cover in depth but rest assured, I will cover them in the future on this very blog.

The one thing I want to make very clear before I start to talk about the topic of blogging is the following:

Blogging is just a vehicle to making money online.

The reason why I say this is that 99% of people do not make a full time living directly from their blogs. Of course, there is that small 1% which end up doing so but that’s the tiny minority. Most people online use blogs as a tool to make money online. I’m not stopping you from trying to be that 1% which makes a full time income solely from a blog, however, it is far easier and more lucrative (financially) to use blogging as just a vehicle to making money online. And it’s a very powerful vehicle if used correctly.

Why Blog?

The number one reason why you should blog is because the search engines (especially Google) love them!

And the reason why they love them is because blogs tend to have the freshest and most up to date content on the Web. Search engines thrive on relevancy and indexing new and fresh content is up there.

As a consequence, blogging has the power to help you get high rankings for target keywords as long as you’ve done your on page SEO correctly.

Content Is King

Because the search engines love indexing new and fresh content on blogs, it is suffice to say that content is king!

You have to be adding new content to your blog on a regular basis, whether it be daily, weekly or fortnightly. The more often the better, however, keep it to a maximum of 1 new post per day.

If you want to visually see the benefits of posting new content on a regular basis, take a look at Problogger. It was started by Australian Darren Rowse back in 2002 and he has posted something new everyday since. In the process, he makes a full time living from his blog as well as being the biggest blogger in Australia and one of the biggest in the world.

This should be enough to show you the power of blogging.

You Pitch, You Lose

I have to point out that posting new content does NOT refer to finding a new product to promote and blatantly pitching it on a blog post.

That’s not what blogging is about.

Blogging is about giving visitors valuable content and information about a certain topic so that they come back and revisit your blog for more in the future.

By blatantly pitching a product is only going to turn away visitors (and potential future customers). And given that they have only just met you, what are your chances of them purchasing from you straight away? Ask yourself: would you buy something from a person you’ve only just met?

The best way to make money with a blog is by using your blog as a medium through which online visitors can get to know you and what you are about. Use a blog to build a relationship with them as well as gain trust.

Build A List

In the previous section, I did not say that you shouldn’t promote your products or services on a blog. In fact, you should and I encourage it. However, it has to be dome in an intelligent.

This is where you need to use list building.

You should utilise your blog to build a list of prospects, which means people interested in what you are all about. This involves grabbing people’s first names and email addresses using what is commonly called an opt in form. However, you have to give them something enticing in return for their details.

Here are a couple of ideas:

- access to a weekly newsletter
- a free video
- a free report
- a free ebook
- a free audio recording

Once people enter your list, then you can start sending them information about your products and services and potentially make sales and get customers.

The Key To Making Money With A Blog

At the end of the day, the key to a powerful money making blog is great regular content. Think about it this way.

The better and more regular your content is, the higher your blog will rank in the search engines. And the higher your rankings are, the more traffic your blog will end up getting. And the more traffic it gets, the more people opt into your list. And the more people that join your list, the more sales and customers you can make.

It couldn’t get any simpler!

To conclude, I would like to say that if you could not understand some of the terminology used and topics covered in this post, don’t worry. As I said at the beginning, I will covering them in greater detail in the future. The most important thing you should get out of all this is that you understand the general concept about how a blog can be used to make money online.

>For most bloggers, Google AdSense is the first and easiest way to start making money online. But reports of how much money you can actually make with it vary widely across the board. While popular bloggers have had a great deal of success with it, smaller blogs often find AdSense to be frustratingly limited. This discrepancy has been perpetuated to the point that many bloggers now believe that to make money with AdSense, you need to have a lot of traffic.

While that’s not exactly wrong; your site’s traffic has a great impact on how much you can earn from it; it’s not the whole truth either. Most importantly, you should not give up on AdSense because of this, because, as famous bloggers themselves have proven: when it works, it works like a charm!

In order to make money with AdSense, you first need to understand how it works. AdSense is a simple ad-publishing tool that can be incorporated into a variety of online mediums and displays ads based on the keywords within the existing text on the page. Every time a visitor to your site clicks on an ad published in your data, you are paid some money. Hence it is called PPC or Pay-Per-Click Advertising. This is usually a figure in cents or pennies, and the exact figure depends most of all on how competitive and profitable your keywords are.

Types of AdSense

AdSense is available for web content (on blogs and web sites), for search (as when you add a Google search bar to your blog and visitors click on a sponsored search result), for mobile content (for mobile-version web sites and pages), for feeds (so that you can display ads even within your RSS and Atom feeds), and for video, parked domains and mobile applications.

How to Make Money With AdSense

1. Understand how AdSense Works

In order to make good profit from AdSense, it’s not enough to just sign up and start publishing ads. First you must know its rules – so that you don’t break them – and its payout method – so that you can develop your strategy accordingly. Take a look at Google’s AdSense center to begin learning.

2. Choose profitable keywords

Even if you already have an existing web site, in order to make money with AdSense you need to choose the most profitable keywords within your niche. If you plan on writing your own content (as opposed to hiring freelancers or copywriters), it is also crucial that you know something about the subjects of those keywords and can research and write useful material on them.

3. Create useful, keyword-rich content

Once you have chosen your keywords, you can actively start creating content while keeping those keywords in mind. Don’t start keyword-spamming, because users will not find your site useful, and while they might click on an ad just to get away from your page, that’s not a profitable or traffic-building strategy. If your content doesn’t make sense, you also risk getting banned by Google; not just the AdSense program but the search engine too!

4. Place your ads strategically.

The placement of your ads within your content really matters. The optimum placement will of course depend on your design and the placement of your text. You also have the choice between image, text and video-based ads, and how well one works for you will depend on your readership, the type of your content and primarily your existing web design. Many WordPress themes and the like come already enabled for displaying ads, but don’t let that prevent you from trying different options and choosing for yourself which one has the best ROI.

5. Build traffic

The more traffic your site has, the more users will click on your ads – it’s that simple. Traffic building is a whole another blog post, but remember that it goes hand in hand with creating useful, keyword-oriented content!

Making money with AdSense is easy – once you understand the program and follow some simple strategies for maximizing your profits, it’s truly a program you can “set and forget”!

Many marketers are trying to figure out how to make money with AdSense. Yet most of them struggle with it. Why? One major reason that almost all people who try to make money with AdSense is that they do not do adequate keyword research and subsequently either choose the wrong keyword phrases to target or don’t target any keywords at all. Following this path is the fastest route to frustration and small profits. On the other hand, by taking the time to choose “good” keyword phrases, you will get more clicks on your AdSense ads. Not only that, but the average price that you’ll make on those clicks will be 10 to 20 times higher.

Is keyword research really that important to making money with AdSense? Absolutely! You simply won’t find success with AdSense if you create content and articles that are about broad, random topics in your niche. To make money with AdSense, you have to use laser-focus when it comes to keyword phrase selection.

The Top Three Characteristics To Look For In Keyword Phrases To Target:

1. High daily searches. If you aren’t choosing specific keywords to target, then you could be unknowingly targeting keyword phrases that get very little daily searches. So even if you did a great job creating quality content about a certain topic in the niche that your site or blog is in, there just might not be many people looking for that information on a daily basis. A small amount of daily searches will result in very few people ever seeing your content (and your AdSense ads). So be sure to target keyword phrases that have a large number of daily searches.

2. Lower competition. Many marketers write content based around “obvious” topics. So they had a website about auto insurance, they would write content based around keyword phrases like “auto insurance quotes”, “cheap auto insurance”, and “best auto insurance.” The problem with this is that just about everyone who has a website in this niche targets these obviously keywords first. Meaning, that there is a lot of results that will show up in Google for these keyword phrases, and chances that anyone will ever see your content and AdSense ads will be very slim. Use a reliable keyword research tool to find those keywords in your niche that have a lower amount of competing results. Targeting these keyword phrases, even if they have lower amounts of daily searches, gives you a much better chance of people actually reading your content and clicking on your AdSense ads.

3. Higher CPC values. The biggest frustration faced by many individuals who are trying to make money with AdSense is low click payouts. They do all this work to create decent content and bust their butts with marketing only to get $0.05 clicks. Generating 5 cent clicks won’t lead to riches. So what can you do? Create content that targets keyword phrases that have high CPC values. “CPC” stands for “cost per click” and is the amount of money that an advertiser pays to get the top position in the ads displayed. This is not the amount of commission that you will get paid per click, but you can use it to get an estimation of how much you can make per click. Most quality keyword research tools can give you the CPC values. Generally, you can assume to make 10-25% of the CPC value. So if you create content around a keyword phrase that has a CPC value of $10, you should make $1.00 to $2.50. Now that’s much better than nickel clicks, right?

If you want to know how to make money with AdSense, you need to place more of an emphasis on keyword phrase selection. When choosing keywords to target, you should look for ones that have decent daily search demand, low competition, and higher CPC values.

A couple weeks ago I happened to catch 20/20 when they were running a segment on false advertising. Although it’s something most people are aware of, I think we all get caught in the trap every once in a while. I mean, really, it’s hard going around not trusting people all the time. Here is a bit of what they had to say:

Visiting Washington, D.C.? The Hyatt Capitol Hill Web site claims it’s “just steps away from the U.S. Capitol.” Online photos appear to confirm this. But when you look at a map — and a more realistic image — you see it’s a lot farther away. Actually, it’s about a third of a mile away.

Elie Seidman, the founder of the hotel review Web site Oyster.com, sees it time and time again: hotels using tricks to make their properties look as desirable as possible. The discrepancy between a hotel’s Internet image and reality is all too widespread, according to Seidman and his staff. “We found that it’s, unfortunately, all too typical,” he said.

Before-and-After Weight Loss Photos Too Good to Be True

Photoshop adjustments and other misleading tactics can go too far — particularly in the diet business. Brook Barth learned that lesson after she lost 65 pounds — but it wasn’t thanks to some miracle diet.

“They are lying. It’s false advertisement, and it’s sad that people are getting sucked into it,” she told “20/20.” Barth did it the hard way — eight grueling months of intense exercise and calorie counting. “It was a lot of hard work,” she said. “I had to completely change my lifestyle.”

Read the rest of these stories here.

I have signed up as an affiliate for a couple of horrible, on the verge of scammy sites. I even ended up returning money I made selling a product that I found out didn’t work at all. I’m sure everyone has a story to tell about online scams; people who make money by selling things to others which they don’t need, which don’t do what they are said to do, and which can even waste people’s time or distract them from what they should be focused on – besides being a waste of money in the long run. And the fact is, that is far from the worst of it.

Do you want to earn money by promoting unethical products? Probably not. But are you always fully aware of what you are promoting?

There are a few categories of products which you should probably be aware of when you are deciding what to promote. You might want to think twice before you throw together a website to promote these types of products, or put one of their ads on an existing site.

After all, it’s not all about money. We are also human beings.

There are three types of products which I would never want to promote:

1. Products which are unnecessary, wasting people’s time and/or money

The “Make Money Online” niche is home to some of the worst culprits – including individuals, sales pages, emails, and advertisements which promise you unlimited riches as long as you invest ($47/$97/$5,000 etc.) in whatever it is they are trying to sell.

Whether it is a coaching program on how to earn money online, an amazing new software program which allows you to rake in thousands of dollars with a few minutes of work, a monthly membership, or perhaps just access to an enormous quantity of downloadable information which you don’t need right this second.

Some of these types of products have real value, and only require a reasonable investment. When they are useful, they do pay off in the long run. There are certainly legitimate products and services which help people save money, earn more money, or learn how to do so. I have invested in quite a few myself, and have been happy with a majority of the items I have purchased.

Some products have little-to-no real use or value for the consumer, but use a convincing sales pitch, and cost too much.

In between the two extremes there are various shades of gray.

But this is not what inspired me to write this post. There are other products one can promote, outside of the “Make Money Online” niche, which are just as bad, and even worse.

2. Products which are used to steal money

There are bogus “free trial” offers which latch onto a customers credit card, steal unauthorized recurring payments, and never let go, no matter how hard the customer tries to cancel.

I have seen affiliate programs for such products. In some cases, these offers would have been relevant to one of my websites. Did I choose to promote them? No!

Examples of products which are likely to be promoted in this manner include Acai berry, colon cleanse, teeth-whitening, and stop-smoking products, which often offer a “free trial” requiring a credit card number “for shipping,” and give you “automatic renewals if you don’t cancel.” A bit of research and Googling will often reveal whether there are scams or dishonest tactics involved.

Not every free trial with paid shipping is a scam, but I am definitely careful before signing up for them when I do.

3. Products which harm people

Then there are is another type of products you can promote. You would only promote these products if a) you don’t really know what you are promoting or b) you don’t care about people and money is your only motivation.

These are products which don’t simply waste people’s time and money, but actually harm people.

It takes a bit of confront to look beyond the surface appearance of modern day life and realize that not everything is what it appears to be on the surface.

The sad fact is, that just because an item has been endorsed by an official agency, an “expert,” or a learned authority, (government or otherwise) does not necessarily make that product useful or even safe.

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the worst in this respect. That does not mean that every pharmaceutical medicine is harmful.

But if you were to do some real, unbiased research in the field, you would be amazed at how many well-known and widely used pharmaceutical drugs:

Have never undergone actual scientific testing as to their results

Were approved for use by the same groups, individuals, and networks, who are profiting by their sales. (Yes, approval agencies do have ties to the pharmaceutical companies, and yes, the people who approve these drugs and medications for use do make money by approving them.)

Have known side-effects (known even by the producers and salesmen of the drugs, but not promoted by them) which range from health problems, to death, to suicide, to murder.

As an added benefit there are ties to the media, which is sometimes (but not always) used to attack any group which begins to expose what is occurring. Which leads people to disbelieve organizations that do so.

If you look into it, you will find that almost every school shooter, loving-family-member-turned family-murderer, or sudden unexplained suicide, involved someone who was taking one of these drugs. Common examples are Zoloft, Paxil (Seroxat), and Prozac, to name a few.

Furthermore the same doctors who were involved in the creation of these drugs can be found openly admitting that the diseases and disorders which the drugs were designed to cure do not exist. These diseases were not found by blood tests or any other form of testing. They are invented by “majority vote”.

But they make a lot of money. Billions per year. So hey, why kill a booming business?

In a previous profession I had first-hand experience with individuals who were the victims of these drugs, sometimes as young as the age of three, and had the heart-wrenching experience of seeing the damage that was done. In some cases I was able to help undo the damage, by getting these individuals onto detoxification programs or other remedies. But, sadly, the effects of legal, approved, and even common-place pharmaceutical drugs were often more harmful, and harder to correct, than the effects of any street drug. I still remember the three year-old-girl who had been put on a drug by a doctor. With a bit of research we found out that the drug was actually Speed. We were actually relived that it was Speed instead of something worse, (and yes I helped the little girl).

Sound difficult to believe? It is. So is war, needless killing of civilians, Chinese killer-cat food, genocide, kid-napping, human-trafficking, and a host of other insanities which occur on a daily basis, inside and outside of the US.

The fact is that it is a crazy world.

In American middle-class society it is very easy to forget that there is something beyond the glossed-over existence we see in front of us, where all appears so happy and regulated.

The purpose of this article is not to depress you about the state of the Earth. The purpose of this article is to communicate to affiliate marketers and online entrepreneurs about what they can do to stem the tides of damage. Or, at least what they can not do.

Because, sadly, I often see affiliate marketers blithely promoting the same products and drugs, which harm people, children, and lives on a regular basis!

When something is too incredible to be believed, we have a tendency to disbelieve it. When we don’t believe it, we don’t do much about it. History is full of incidents which we would never have believed could have happened, but happened.

Okay. My point – just because you do some keyword research and find a niche does not mean its all hunky-dory to promote that item. I have spoken of bogus Make-Money-Online products, free trials, and pharmaceutical drugs. But that’s definitely not the only thing.

Craigslist has been prosecuted for promoting prostitution and contributing to devastating effects on women and children.

A few days ago I saw a banner ad on an Internet Marketing side. It said “Pimping has never been this easy.” I hoped it was a joke and was curious, so I clicked on it. It then went on to say how you could earn $500 per day just placing these ads … in the sidebar I saw a string of prostitution ads. They weren’t joking at all.

The upshot – think before you promote. Most people care about others and want to help people. Only a few are truly money-motivated, and even those are basically good – way, down deep.

There is nothing wrong with making money online as long as you always remember to put ethics, honesty, honor, and integrity first.

Since I’ve started advertising my blogs on different Social Networking sites, I’ve noticed a disturbing phenomenon – blatant click fraud. I have received numerous requests through personal messages that read something like this: “I’ve clicked on your ad, hope you do the same for me” - I really hate these messages. Why would anyone want to take a chance at losing the ability to make money in order to get an extra penny or two? It’s fine if you want to screw up your money making potential, but don’t pull me into your sneaky, deceptive money earning fraud. I don’t want you clicking on my ads unless you are really interested in them and I definitely WILL NOT click back on yours. It seems I’m not the only one having issues with click fraud lately.
“Pay-per-click,” by far the most popular form of online advertising, recently came under fire as charges of rampant “click fraud” gather steam on the Web.
Google and Yahoo! earn the majority of their money through sales of advertising to tens-of-thousands of online merchants, companies, and professional.
In fact, some estimate that 99% of all Google’s revenue comes from advertising sales. Unfortunately, allegations of click fraud may well rain on Google’s otherwise sunny parade and cause a whole scale revamping of current online advertising practices.
Pay-per-click advertising does exactly what it sounds: advertisers pay for each click on their ad, usually mixed in among search engine results or displayed on relevant websites.
“Click fraud” occurs when, for whatever reason, an ad gets clicked by someone or something (usually an automated “bot” that simulates clicks) with no intention of ever buying anything from the advertiser.
The sole intention of click fraud is to simply drain an advertiser’s budget and leave them with nothing to show but an empty wallet.
Who commits click fraud?
Usually an unscrupulous competitor who wants to break a rival’s bank, online “vandals” who get their kicks causing other people grief, or search engine advertising affiliates who want to earn fat commissions by racking up piles of bogus clicks.
Regardless of who does it or why, click fraud appears to be a growing problem search engines hope stays under their advertising clients’ radar.
This problem isn’t exactly news to the search engine giants.
In fact, on page 60 of their 3rd quarter Report for 2004, Google admits that they have “regularly refunded revenue” to advertisers that was “attributed to click-through fraud.”
Google further states that if they don’t find a way to deal with this problem “these types of fraudulent activities could hurt our brand.”
Bottom line for Google and Yahoo! (which owns Overture, the Web’s largest pay-per-click search engine): as word of click fraud spreads across the Web, they must act quickly to calm the nerves of advertisers who could well abandon them over doubts about the veracity of their advertising charges.
The search engines all claim to carry measures that identify and detect click fraud, but details about how they do it and to what extent remain sketchy.
They claim revealing details about security would compromise their efforts and give the perpetrators a leg up on circumventing their defenses.
This sounds good, but affords little comfort to advertisers who feel caught between losing out on their best traffic sources and paying for advertising that won’t result in revenue.
One way to protect your business against click fraud is to closely monitor your website statistics.
Look for an unusually high number or regular pattern of clicks from the same IP address.
If you need help, enlist the aid of your hosting provider to aid you in spotting suspicious trends in your website traffic.
Also, a number of services have sprung up online to help advertisers spot and quickly analyze and compile the data necessary to effectively dispute fraudulent click charges with the search engines.

Next year may just prove to be one of the most challenging times for pursuing online or Internet marketing on the web. It may just be a watershed moment for many marketers struggling to keep abreast of all the different factors which have come into play in recent months. Most of these changes will stem from two main sources for potential upheaval: the first being the New FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Guidelines regarding Testimonials and Endorsements and the second being “ALL” the recent changes within Google.

Actually, we already have the new FTC Guidelines which came into effect on Dec. 1st of 2009, but how these new rules are enforced will play out in the coming year as test-cases are brought to court. Basically, these new rules call for absolute disclosure and full transparency regarding Testimonials and Endorsements when a product or service is being offered for sale. Any business (monetary) relationship between the endorser and the company must be made known to the potential buyer. Obviously for those in online or affiliate marketing this could have a great impact if these new rules are strictly enforced. Just imagine all the website owners and bloggers who slap a few banners or affiliate links on their sites to cover hosting or operating costs… will they now have to disclose all these business arrangements?

For professional affiliate marketers and the companies/products they’re promoting, these new guidelines could cause potential headaches and/or legal ramifications since a general blanket disclaimer on their sites will no longer be suffice. To help solve this problem, many of the major companies are now placing an “affiliate” tag on all their banners and making it obvious a business relationship exists with its affiliates. In addition, many online marketers are placing additional disclaimers, affiliate seals and in other ways making it known certain links are indeed affiliate links and a relationship does exist with the product and/or services being promoted.

With these new guidelines, another big issue is email marketing, one of the major marketing techniques of most online marketers. Will a full disclosure be necessary for every email sales pitch? Savvy web marketers know the key to increased sales is in the “follow-up” and the “cookie-ing” of potential buyers; how will the new Guidelines affect this very effective marketing practice? How all these new rules or guidelines play out will make next year a very interesting one for marketing on the web.

Despite this, perhaps the greatest cause for upheaval in the coming year will be Google. There are countless reasons why Google will be a major game changer in 2010 for online marketing. Ever since Bing and more recently the potential Bing/Yahoo competition, Google has gone into complete overdrive, implementing new changes and debuting new programs like there was no tomorrow.

First, we have Google Caffeine which Google is introducing (full force) early in the new year. Google Caffeine, which is a major overhaul of its search engine, will no doubt cause many a marketer some sleepless nights as the total fall-out becomes evident. Other Google updates in the past (Florida Update comes readily to mind) have wreaked havoc on many top ranking sites, but this time Google is doing things a little differently and have even given webmasters a beta version of the new search engine. Still, rightly or wrongly, many online marketers are bracing themselves for the full impact of Caffeine. Will it mean smooth sailing or a stomach sickening roller-coaster ride for marketers and webmasters?

Second, we have the introduction of “Real Time” search which will be featured in Google’s SERPs. This will make the social media sites like Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace… much more important. Again, the implications for online marketers could be enormous since many can now reach the first page through a different route. Will it also mean more “Real Time” spam? But more importantly, will it mean a greater marketing opportunity for the online marketer who exploits it?

Third, we are seeing Google moving more and more towards “Visual Search” with the introduction of Google Goggles for mobile phones. Just take a picture and you get the Google results instantly – no typing, just point and click. Just envision countless clueless teenagers or more importantly helpless shoppers suddenly being empowered with knowledge and wisdom. Could do more for education since the invention of the printed word and the info-commercial combined. Talk about scary! But will the implications for web marketing be just as revolutionary and enlightening?

Fourth, Google has made it known through its spokesperson Matt Cutts, that site-loading times will be a ranking factor in the new improved Google. Also, proper and correct page coding will also be more important if you want your site to be at full advantage. Broken links will be a big “No-No”, while linking out to important related sites a big plus. All this is only logical, Google’s main product is and has always been its search results, anything which improves those results and provides a more pleasing experience for the Google user should be front and center. Obviously, one way for Google to stay on top, is to provide the best search results to its users.

Fifth, in order to please the end-user, Google is also moving more towards “Personalized Search” which will make SEO and ranking in the top spot for your chosen keywords a total nightmare for many professional SEOs and online marketers. If everyone can choose their own top results, isn’t SEO more or less, a lame duck? Again, the ramifications of personalized search will further play out in 2010, but will professional marketers like what they see?

Finally, while no one would argue Google is King of the Hill when it comes to online search, will all these new changes strengthen or weaken Google’s grip? Will the combined Bing/Yahoo be able to give this giant some much needed competition? Or will Google’s main competition come from an unlikely source, such as big name multi-national corporations who are moving their operations online. Can these big-name keyworded domains start directly pulling in the majority of the web’s traffic, making all search engines secondary? As people become more web savvy, will they go directly to what they’re looking for on the web, bypassing the search engines altogether – including the mighty Google? Such a scenario could have greater consequences for the affiliate marketer since a direct line to a company’s site or product will obviously mean less sales for the online marketer, who really works in coordination with the search engines, either through organic search or PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising in these same search engines.

Overall, the new FTC Guidelines and recent changes to Google, will make next year one of the most interesting times to be pitching anything online. Throw into this the full effect that a combined Bing/Yahoo might bring to the table, and you have the recipe for a tumultuous white knuckle ride, until the dust finally settles and marketers make adjustments like they always do. Until then, hold on because things will probably get a little hectic for many web marketers before we see the light at the end of the tunnel.

When it comes to making money with a website, one of the most popular methods is running text and/or image ads on various pages. It’s referred to as contextual advertising and “inline ads”. Text or image ads are shown which match the content of the pages. Inline ads appear as highlighted words on the page when the visitor hovers over highlighted text on the page. Ads appear in small boxes. Contextual ads are often displayed to the right or left of website copy, or as blocks within sections of the text. The ads shown are related to the content of each individual page. As visitors click on these links, you earn cash.

Probably the largest and most used of the contextual ad programs is Google’s Adsense. Google really is a giant when it comes to the Internet, and their talents go far beyond just being a search engine. Adsense is used by many site owners to bring in a monthly income.

If you’re interested in running Adsense ads, first you’ll need to apply and get approved. Once approved for one site, you can place Adsense on any other site that you own. You can decide to run only text ads or choose from image and text. Various sizes are offered, and you can custom select colors to match the look of your site. Once the code is generated, you paste it on your HTML pages where you want the ads to appear. Simple & easy.

But what happens if you’re not approved by Google, or for some reason your Adsense account were to be terminated? What would you do then? There are other ad network options out there and I’ve gathered some of the best alternatives together here.

Before signing up for any ad program, make sure you read their terms of service and any requirements to make sure it’s a good fit for your website. Also, review the payment options so you’ll know how and when you can expect to be paid. Let’s review:

Text-Link Ads

Once your site is approved, you insert the code on your page and they sell simple text ads that appear on your site. You have final say over any ads being published. Payments are made via Paypal or Clickbank. You receive 50% of the sale price for each link they serve up. This ad network is acceptable to be run on the same page as Google Adsense as this is not considered contextual advertising.

Adbrite.com

A variety of ad formats to choose from. You can run text ads, banners, inline ads or even full page ads. You can choose to approve or reject ads before they appear on your site. Pays monthly with the default minimum check amount of $100.00. Once your site is approved, ads will appear within 24 hours of your pasting the code. Adbrite has no policy against using other ad networks on your site at the same time.

Kontera

Contextually relevant ads and ad units which are linked to keywords on your web page. Ads displayed will match the content of your site. For your website to be approved it must be in English, be content rich with more than 50 words per page. You can run text, image, billboard, and video ads.

Quigo

Quigo offers content-targeted advertising to those with strong traffic. Publishers with 500,000 or more monthly page views are encouraged to apply. Once approved, simply copy and paste the code.

Yahoo

Works very similar to Google’s Adsense program. You design your own ads, choosing colors and formats, then paste some code on your page. You’ll be paid per click. Advanced ad targeting and display capabilities can sometimes improve your results. You can choose to be paid via Paypal once your earnings are $50.00, or a check when you hit $100.00.

Chitika

A full service online ad network which serves over two billion monthly impressions across more than 30,000 websites. Chitika ads are not contextual and can be run on the same page as Adsense. Twenty-four different ad sizes are available. Payment is via Paypal once your account is at $10.00, or a check when you reach $50.00.

Miva

Miva offers a wide variety of ad formats to choose from: content ads, inline ads, search ads. You’ll be paid on a per click basis. Payments are made monthly by check or Paypal once your balance reaches $25.00. You can also block competitor ads from appearing on your site.

Affiliatesgarage

A different type of ad network which allows you to display affiliate ads in an “Adsense Style”. You can run Clickbank and Paydotcom text ads on your site or blog and earn up to 75% commission.

Bidvertiser

Display text ads on your website and let advertisers bid against each other. Ad formats are skyscrapers, banners, rectangles, buttons. They even have ads for your RSS feeds. Payout is monthly via Paypal once your balance is $10.00. This one pays on a cost per click basis.

Amasenseads

This service allows you to create Google Adsense styled ads for Amazon products. Different ad formats are available which makes it easy to integrate into your site. Amasense can also be used side by side with Google Adsense without any problems.

As ads are clicked on, you earn a percentage of the product which is paid by Amazon depending on the type of product that is bought. You must have an Amazon associate account first before signing up. To get one go to https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/

As you can see Adsense is not the only game in town when it comes to running ads on your site. If you have multiple sites, you may want to use one of the services mentioned above, then test, to see which one is a better earning opportunity. You might be surprised at what you learn.

It’s against Google’s terms of service to run another contextual ad service on the same page as Adsense, but there are exceptions to the rule. Most of the services above will tell you if you can run their ads alongside Adsense.

If your websites are mainly information based, network advertising is an excellent way for you to earn an income with little effort on your part. No matter if you use Adsense or another service, it just makes for good dollars and cents.
