Got An Extra 100K? Advertise Like Crazy!

outdoor advertising

Have you ever looked around and really seen all of the different places you can advertise?  I’m not talking about the internet, I’m talking about in your everyday environment.  I’ve become so wrapped up in the internet advertising/marketing world that I forgot there is a whole group of people that actually don’t go on the computer every day and need to be reached through a different advertising medium.  When I really started paying attention to the advertising market I was stunned by the amount and scope of advertising venues you can find in almost any area you look.  Here are a few examples of some of the non-traditional  advertising you can buy in Norfolk, VA -

  1. Billboards -  All over the city and interstate
  2. City Buses – I love this – the whole side of the bus covered with an advertisement.
  3. Shopping Carts (I noticed recently at the local harris teeter that you can buy advertising on the seat of the shopping cart)
  4. Airplanes (you know the little ones that fly up and down the coast while you’re at the beach?)
  5. Hot Air Balloons
  6. Graffitti Mural Advertising
  7. Beach Umbrellas

I was reading an article in fortune magazine about a little company in San Fransisco called Airship Ventures.  They take people out on Zepplin rides in the California area and offer advertising space (for a small fortune)  What a cool way to advertise.  Who doesn’t look up when they see a zepplin flying overhead?

(Disney is paying Airship Ventures somehere around100K (exact terms haven’t been disclosed) to advertise the Pixar movie “Up” on one of their Zepplins) -Fortune Magazine

With all of these different advertising methods to choose from are there times when a line is crossed, where you feel your privacy is invaded?  A couple weeks ago I recieved a “Newsletter” from the City of Norfolk Public schools.  Inside this newsletter there was a pile of advertisements from local businesses.  This reallly irritated me.  I think using students addresses to make money advertising businesses is an invasion of privacy.  I guess businesses are very good at worming their way into every home – whether you want them there or not.

Do you have any cool advertising opportunities in your area?  Which advertising REALLY stands out for you?  When do you think advertisers cross a line?

wish I had an extra 100K to do that kind of advertising. Venues in Buffalo, NY aren’t much different: buses, newspapers, TV and radio spots, billboards.

To be honest it bugges me a bit to see adverisements everywhere I look. Especially on some classic buildings covered by newspaper or another bank advertisement. That is something awful. The growing ads number in our cities destroys the unique architecture and exceptional character of every city, by making it just one big billboard.

I acknowledge having had fantastes about using transit advertising as a medium to promote mein own blog … but then again, on the other hand, can you imagine the offerings on your very own CafePress shop (such as I’m trying to use) as being low-cost ur-billboards in and of themselves for your own blog?

You are correct but of course, it is also a big consideration what kind of ad one is running. I mean, you cannot just place an ad if the target audience would be not there. Say, an ad for winter stuffs would not be great to be placed in beach area during summer season.

On the other hand, I think it’s also a brilliant idea to put ads in toilet doors. Here in Netherlands, I saw a lot of ads in the tram… the whole of the trams is designed as the ad itself. Artistic and really attention catching.

By the way, the insight you shared here is highly valuable. Thanks you.

Have you herd about companies buying ad space on the shells of fresh eggs? It’s crazy but true!

Some interesting ideas about advertising. My only problem is I don’t really like to see a ton of ads scattered all over the place it can take away from what your trying to sell or promote at times. I will admit the ads on an egg shell is a unique idea whacky but unique. Thanks for great info. and different ideas to think about, I have always thought about the people that don’t go online as much as others that’s where we should be tapping into. In fact I’ve made flyers at one time about my blog and had very good response by way of traffic. jj

the “small” ones do sound whacky, but the last thing i want to see is a beautiful building being defiled by a huge Walmart ad.

As always, you made some great points! Some that are often overlooked in our business. Thanks for writing about this and putting it into perspective for all of us!
