Spammers-Throw Them Off A Cliff, See If They Can Fly

Spammers SUCK – every single last one of them.  I am always trying to come up with new and inventive ways to advertise online, but one thing I have never, ever pushed was spamming.  It is one of the most loathsome practices on the internet today.  It’s everywhere, my blogs, my email, forums I’ve joined, online communities – I’m drowning in it.

It seems like everytime something cool comes around, like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, the nefarious internet scavengers come calling, saturating the community with their unwanted drivel.  I think they are ruining the internet.   They sure suck up a lot of my time.  I have to apologize to anyone leaving comments here lately.  I have been recieving around 500 spam comments a day and it gets a little hard to sift through them to find the real comments.  Every once in a while I’m clicking the spam button like crazy and accidentally delete a good comment.

I wish  I could come up with a new invention to stop all the spam on the internet.  The spam comments I get are bad enough but that isn’t it, I also get between 500-1000 spam emails a day.  It takes so much time to delete all the spam I don’t have time to do anything else online.  I don’t understand what these guys are thinking – “Hmm, let’s see, if I send out 300 comments in one hour for this product, that’s sure to make someone want to buy it AND then they definitely will approve the comment and I’ll get a permanent link on their website.  Now I’ll do the same thing to this list of 300,000,000 people I bought from this guy for $5 on some forum.”  Today I got lucky.  Some moron who is trying to sell shoes, left 300 Spam comments on my blog – 300 – so IRRITATING – anyway, the idiot actually leaves all of his correct inoformation so I sent an email to his host and then sent him an email telling him.  May be he won’t spam for a couple days.  Here is what I sent him:

I have HUNDREDS of this stupid comment on my blog – PLEASE STOP Spamming – It doesn’t work and you just irritate the hell out of everyone.  If I recieve one more of these I will contact GoDaddy and report you for spamming.

Can anyone tell what I’ve been doing today?  If you could punish a spammer what would you do?

In addition to the disgusting type of spam, there’s also, “Great post. Keep up the good work.”

How many of those link scavenging comments do you get a day?

I’ve written enough about spam on my blog that I even set up a spam tag:

    http://online-social-networking.com/tag/spam

I’ve looked at spam from a number of angles, but no matter what, it’s still spiced ham.

My largest headache the past three weeks is trying to keep spammers away from my blog. I have tried every combination of Wordpress plugins and when I finally have it locked down tight and no manual deletions to be found. That is when I find that my regular readers have problems leaving comments or I get error messages to my readers.

I have five, yes five different plugins to combat the spam. So far I am not getting anymore errors, or lets say very few. I still have to manually delete around 20 spammers a day, but I can live with that. I guess it’s just part of doing business and growing your blog. Great article by the way.

I am surprised that Akismet doesn’t block the spam.

Yes Sheila I agree with you. Most of them are just a bunch of affiliate marketers with nothing of value to say. Web 2.0 does not exist for them. I get lots of spam emails but not so much on my blog anymore. Try using the Akismet (sp?) plugin, then when you get spam put the ips in the HTML code for it and they are blocked. After 2-3 weeks of this most of the culprits are gone.

I’m new to the blogging world, but I’m using the Defensio plugin for wordpress and it’s working great so far. As far as email spam goes gmail seams pretty good at filtering it out so that makes me very happy. :)

Sheila, I so feel you girlfriend. Spam is like the waste of time you wish you could return to someone. i’ve got a trick. I know it’s bad but it so makes me feel better.

when somebody continues to spam me, I go to their site, leave a link to a honeypot and wham, it’s over.

mean but effective, trust me. I had the kanye west shoe fight going on in my comments for a week and it even included a threat to sue me along with whomever they were beefing with. I got so pissed I closed the comments for the piece, then went to their site and their ebay shop and blew it up with honeypot url reposts. that ended the scenario quickly. trust me spammers hate it when you return the favor.

also I block their ip’s on the backside of my blog with the wordpress plugin – BAN. it works like a charm. that stops them cold, but I leave them subscribed to my blog; and lock them out. cold blooooooooded, sexysexysexy – to quote Rick “cocaine is a hell of a drug” James. and he oughta know. (wink*wink)

    RE – A BadGalSays

You’ll have to teach me some of your “evil” tricks – what the heck is a honeypot?

PS – the post I was trying to put together to update this one got trashed, I got bad info off of a couple of blogs here. I’ve got to watch it I’m always ready to bash EC but sometimes some of the people who are complaining don’t do their research. As far as what I think is going to happen with EC – I have NO clue – I think they have made it PAINFULLY obvious that they don’t care very much what the members think, want or whatever. I never know when I’m going to get mad enough to just walk away. I’ve been sooo close quite a few times. (It’s just that I would miss the blog hopping, EC makes it really easy)

I feel your pain Sheila, but your e-mail is on your contact page for all the Spam bots to see!

I would use WP AntiSpam-SpamFree plugin which has a contact form built in, Add BanHammer with: StopForumSpam (dot)com checked and say Bye to those Lame Brains.
@ A BadGalSays: Love your evil!
