When Is It Going Too Far?
By Sheila on Jun 22, 2010 in Traffic Generation
Advertising has always been a bit invasive. It’s part of the game to search for new ways to put information in front of people that will actually get someone to buy a product. The problem is, what works one day has absolutely no affect the next. So, marketers have to constantly come up with different ways to torture people with advertisements.
I thought it was going a bit too far when I got a newsletter from the Public School my kids attended that was STUFFED with advertisements from different companies – kind of like a valpak coupon envelope. It irritated me to think that the Public School System was using my information, through my KIDS, to send advertising to the community. But the more I thought about it I decided not to raise a stink because ultimately these funds from advertising would go back into the school system which really needed the financial help.
But today I read something that really pissed me off (and it isn’t even local) – check this crazy idea out: (what the hell are those guys in California smoking? I want some!)(from Sodahead)
License Plate Ads?
They’re already on menus, bathrooms, elevators and gas pumps and web videos, so is there anywhere to escape the ceaseless barrage of advertising?
Thanks to satellite radio, the car has been a lone refuge from the assault – assuming you can take your eyes off those giant digital billboards – but if California legislators have their way that could soon end.
According to an Associated Press report, state lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the state to look into the manufacturing of electronic license plates for cars that would look like normal plates, but then switch to a programmed digital message when the vehicle is stopped for more than four seconds in traffic or at a red light.
The plates could also be used to broadcast Amber Alerts or traffic information in an emergency. If the technology pans out, California could be the first state to sign on, which may help generate some of the desperately needed dollars to fill the state’s gaping $19 billion deficit.
What would you do if they implemented this where you live?

I’d stop driving. Or at least, I’d try. I already work from home and don’t drive a whole lot anyway. Any new place of advertising is invasive to me, but then we’d probably get used to it, although I still don’t like renaming sports arenas.

I know what you mean.
Have you seen the video from Man Over Board. The one with the Japanese video? I think/hope they are promoting sushi.

If the plate only displayed an ad when the car was at a traffic light or otherwise stopped I would be all over this one. Only because it would be cool. I get really distracted by the digital billboards. Also, the guy who created Valpak lives behind me.

now those advertisement are gonna be distracting. too much could lead to traffic because of distracted drivers, or worse, accidents. anyways, you might want to join our Summer giveaway – you can win $50 – just grab our badge.

I’d tell them to take their plate and shove it, unless they’re giving me a break on the plate fees or paying me for advertising on my property.
