Where the Hell Did My Pagerank Go?
By Sheila on Apr 3, 2009 in Advertising Tips
After months at PR2, PR3 and PR4 I thought I was moving up in the google pagerank game. What a shock when I checked my pagerank today and it is at 0 – what the heck?!!! I’m not really sure how this happened. My site is indexed in google and googles webmaster tools show no indication of any problems with the site at all except one broken link. Maybe I just have not been out there creating enough new links – I’m not really sure. I guess I became complacement with the direction I thought this site was going. So now it’s time to get moving - reassess and restart my link building in earnest. I didn’t realize how easy it was to lose pagerank. I busted my butt for months to get the pr 4, now it will be interesting to see what I have to do to get it back. I wish there was an easy way to find out WHY so you can fix it and move on.
After some research I’ve made a plan. Here are some things I will do – First, figure out what I was doing when my pagerank was at its highest. I’ll check how many links I had in both the articles and the web copy itself. If I had 28 to 39 links on my web page before, and several in my articles, and then I drop the number of links down to 18 links instead of the original 39 that I had before, I could start to see my Pagerank fall pretty fast. Here is another good reason that your Pagerank could fall – because you either don’t have enough keywords or key phrases in either your SEO Articles or your website content or in both. Not having enough keywords/phrases in your material is something that will drop your pagerank faster than almost anything. To try and bring my pagerank up quickly, I’ll go back and re-work my web content to make sure that I have more than enough links and keywords/phrases in my web copy and content to help the search engine crawlers to find my SEO Articles, as well as my web page, by the links and the keywords/phrases.
Here’s are some things you can do to prevent the shock of a sudden drop of the almighty Google PageRank:
1 – Diversify your traffic, make sure you cultivate other sources of traffic other than the search engines. Form partnerships and strategic links with other webmasters. Interact in forums and online communities.
2 – Provide quality information and free products or services that get ‘good word of mouth’ recommendations from your visitors. Content will always be king — make sure it reigns
supreme on your site.
3 – Pick the right domain name. If you can, choose a short catchy keyword for your domain, one people will remember and would naturally type into a search engine or browser to find what they’re looking for on the web. For example: www.internetmarketing.com
4 – If you’re having success with your site,(or/and especially if you’re not) venture into off-line advertising and promotion. Use traditional promotional products, t-shirts, caps, bumper stickers, etc. to promote your URL. You can also try PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising to provide you with targeted traffic and sidestep the search engines.
5 – Try viral products like ebooks, reports and free software programs to get your links out into the marketplace. You can also try product or site testimonials which are another great source of targeted traffic.
6 - Be extremely careful of any out-going links from your site. Don’t link to bad neighborhoods (link farms, banned sites, etc.) Google will penalize you for bad links.
7 – Onsite SEO factors does have an influence on rankings –make sure your site is dressed to kill. Pay attention to keyword density, title descriptions, meta tags, alt tags and interior linking structure. If you can, optimize your site for all three major search engines: MSN, Yahoo and Google. But don’t stop there, also submit your site to the countless other smaller search engines on the web. It’s the old adage, don’t
put all your eggs into the ever-changing Google basket or you’re probably turn your site and yourself into one desperate basket case. Other search engines listed here: http://www.isedn.org. Along those same lines, have a large spread of keyword phrases that you’re targeting with the content on your site. Don’t go after extremely competitive keywords which have countless major players with deep pockets buying links, left right and center. Instead, pick a whole range of keyword phrases that have less or little competition. All these keyword phrases will add up to a flood of traffic for your site. Phrases that for the most part won’t be affected by a sudden drop in PageRank. One good site for finding these keywords is www.nichebot.com, it will give both the number of hits and the amount of competition for each keyword.
8 - There is one more strategy you must explore if you want to lessen the power and importance of your own site’s PR. One strategy that will bring in tons of Google traffic even if your PR is ZERO. You must utilize the PageRank of other sites on the web. Use off-page optimization for your major keywords. Build countless anchor text links through keyword rich articles, content related blogs and products that benefit from the high PR of other sites on the web.
9 – Keyword rich articles are some of the best examples of this method, placing them on high PR sites will filter Google traffic through these articles onto your site. It will also warm up these visitors before they each your site and they will be more receptive to any of your site’s offering; never underestimate the power of the Pre-sell. Build enough of these links and a sudden drop in your own Google PR ranking won’t drastically ffect your bottom line or the amount of quality traffic you are receiving.
What’s even more satisfying, if you build these links, partnerships, and off-site optimization — your Google PageRank will probably go up. If it doesn’t, who cares, for you will have Google-Proofed your site against any sudden drop in your site’s PR rankings and broadened the reach of your site by using the high PR of other sites on the Web. In the process, you will have protected your site and yourself from the big bad Google PR wolf.
Here is one more great reference I found on Problogger.com 20 Linkbaiting Techniqes
OK Enough giving tips, it’s time for me to follow my own advice, I know it works – Now I’ve got to go and get busy!!

I’ve seen a couple of blogs who lost their PR, most of them surprised with the sudden drop. I have 2 on mine but my target is to get a 4 and higher eventually. I’m still new to all the link building strategies but I hope my blog will make it. Good luck to you!

Usually when pagerank drops to zero you pissed off the Google gods. One reason can be that you have used more than the allowed amount of Adsense ads. You do not look like you did that. Another HUGE reason that gets most people is what you actually posted. Google is getting tricky in trying to find people that do paid posts. Google bots now look for phrases in your posts that have to do with getting paid to blog. You have to be careful of your wording so you do not trigger their suspicions. I dropped to zero before and popped right back up after the next pageranking. I just deleted the two posts that talked about paid posts. I would look through the posts you wrote since the last page ranking.
Good Luck

I got a few things that I know will help you out:
Immediately change your permalink structure so that your page urls will containing the name of the posts instead of the dreaded ?p=143 (you do this by inserting /%postname%/into your WP Admin control Permalinks custom setting)
Get as many quality backlinks as you can (one way to do this is by commenting on high PR sites that use “do-follow” tags)
Use Related Sites and Related Posts plugin at the end of posts
Make a way for visitors to keep track of comments they leave by installing Subscribe to Post plugin
These are some things That we as marketers have to do to stay up to date and keep the links flowing toward our blogs…hope this helps

Do you use Alexia the web tracking site in addition to Google Analytics? I have found differing numbers on my host service log vs. Google. I’m not sure if Google is filtering out certain numbers but the difference is several hundred hits per day.
By ana/ps on Apr 4, 2009 | Reply
Ah, your page rank is gone. Sometimes a page rank will only stay for 1-6 months, after that, it will disappear again until who knows when you will ever get a page rank. Perhaps you will only get 2 or 1 next time, which is better than 0 like I always have. I had a pr 4 and now I have 0 for a long time now. My page rank disappeared twice and never came back since. It’s awful.

People get all confused about page rank. It is all about STRONG links and conforming. You break the code of google and you pay. I have read posts like this a thousand times over the years. EVERY TIME the blog was a big billboard.

can relate as my rank went from 2 to 0. Had heard was easy to got from a 2 to a 3 but..i don’t think so! For a time my Alexa rank was climbing but now it sems to also be going in the wrong direction, in this case north! i think when you try to influence your rank unnaturally,Google frowns on that. We are all with enrecard and my bounce rate is high as many jus stay 5 secs. The best way to get traffic, is to be interesting and have a page people visit because they want to! Ofcourse we need to register with search engines and trade links and comment on each other’s blogs and posts like we are doing now here. How else would the public find us? I hear being an expert and writing articles also helps as you and i both do but you better as while i have alot of great FREE info on my site, it is not easily seen or tagged well with dense keywords and phrases like you said.

buying & selling links gets our site penalised in Google … but how do google know that the link in our blogroll is a paid link ? it can be our network site also or our frds site too.
By Not Big News on Apr 6, 2009 | Reply
It usually is a temporary glitch that it occurs during PR updates. Give it a day or two.
A few pointed out you might have been penalized for PPP; could be. Google wants your links “nofollow” in paid posts.

same thing happened to my blog unexpectedly this week, I had been at PR 3 for the longest time, then dropped to PR 2 – it’s weird, because in the last month I’ve actually built a bunch of quality incoming links. The only outlinks I do might be to other good blogs or mainstream media articles – is the latter ineffectual?
By MoneyEnergy on Apr 6, 2009 | Reply
how does selling links on your site penalize you? how would google know they are “sold” links? that’s just simple advertising – surely people paying you to host ads on your site isn’t considered “black hat” – that just doesn’t make any sense. Someone please email me and let me know.
By Eric "Speedcat Hollydale" on Apr 6, 2009 | Reply
… again, you need links from high rank blogs. Traffic is a small part of the equation.
Note that 10,000 links from PR 0 and PR 1 are really of no value.
By Dee on Apr 6, 2009 | Reply
I can relate to this happening and for a while I was dismayed and perlexed as to why this could happen. I recently downloaded the GoogleTraffic Report which details from Googles own Quality Rater Guide how Google rates sites and how you can not only get traffic to your sites but also ensure Google values your site and ranks it higher in the SERPs.

Another thing you are trying is to step through what has worked. In the process you are sharing that experience so others who has not yet achieved good PR or has lost their PR would be using it. Get links from pages with a higher page rank than you on their home page. If you can’t, get them from pages with the same pr as you.

I still see a PR0. clearly you got slapped. My blog was punished for the longest time after an Adwords dispute. They finally declared an amnesty and my pr shot up from 3 to 4, and has been bouncing back and forth ever since.
What I did to try and improve my standing was to no-follow any link that was remotely spammy. Add a sitemap, a privacy policy, an about page, and contacted Google through their tools website saying I had taken the above actions and was there anything else I could do to improve my standing. They never responded, but I haven’t been pagerank slapped since then either.
